I've always wanted a cb......but what would my name be????
I'm supposed to be on the Coca-Cola stage sometime during the day, I'm not sure about the announcer's booth, but I know I'm going to meet the announcer. I'm sure if I find Ed Clark....maybe. Ed is a great guy!
When your there, look for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame display near the Coca-Cola stage. I'll be around too!
Doesn't surprise me....politics has been with Nascar since December of 1947!
First off....That was one of the best articles that I think I've read about Richard! Awesome!
Second, if you want to hear my Petty Story, I met him in 2008. Since I am with the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, 2008 was to be our first Lakewood Speedway Reunion. One of our board members got in contact with one of Richard's people. See, someone restored the Lakewood Flagstand, and gave it to Richard at his retirement party. Richard won his first race at Lakewood in 59', but was disqualified by Lee. So, the flagstand had been sitting at the Level Cross Shop since Winter of 92, and when Richard heard about our event, he wanted to donate it to us! My dad and I volunteered to make the long trip up to Level Cross to get it, and bring it back (kind of like Smokey and the Bandit! lol) We left Dawsonville at 2AM, and arrived at Level Cross somewhere around 12. (this was about a month after the cup team moved) We pulled up (Thankfully in a Dodge truck) right up front infront of the main office. Just as soon as we got out of the truck, a man in a forklift came around. When the guy got off, I asked him if Richard was going to be here today. He turned around and pointed at an all black Chrysler 300 that was rounding the corner. Richard pulled up right next to where I was standing, and right next to our truck. He kicked open the door, he stepped out wearing a red 50th Anniversary button down with a 50th anniversary belt buckle that was easily the size of both my fists, with black pants, black boots, and a black hat... he spit some tobacco on the ground, and said..."Man I can't even get my own parking spot no more". We introduced ourselves, then he said "My name's Richard, I used to be a race car driver." After he signed my autograph book (I let him have a whole page), a picture and a diecast car, he invited me inside the office to look around while my dad and the shop crew loaded the huge flagstand onto our trailer. I stayed in the office while Richard went elsewhere to do business. After I looked at a few pictures, sheetmetal, etc, I went back outside and sat on the bench when Richard came out with a stack-full of cowboy hats, atleast 8 of em'. He set them on top of his car while he opened the back door, and just simply 'tossed' about $3000 worth of hats into his car. He explained that he and Linda (who pulled up a little later) were heading out to their Wyoming Ranch the next day. I guess he needed a hat for each day. When the stand was loaded, he opened the door to the shop and pointed to a few of his things in there (Like I said, this was right after the cup cars left, so barley anything was there, the restoration business was still in the process.) He had a few Morris Minors and a custom golf cart, and I think an old Buick. When we were getting ready to leave, Richard gave my dad instructions on how to get to both Victory Junction and the Petty Museum (which I very much enjoyed. Later that year my camera was either lost or stolen...so no pictures!) In fact, as we were leaving, Dale Inman was coming towards us, blocked the drive-way and came up to our window. After we told him what we were doing, he let us through. I neverrealizedit until later on, when I figured out who it was. At the time, I just thought it was a grounds keeper! lol. When we got to the museum, the desk clerks saw what we had, and let us in for free. On the way back, you should of seen the looks we were getting carrying a 20+ foot flagstand that was sideways on our trailer. There was even a tour bus we passed at one point. A few minutes later, the bus was coming back beside us, and just stayed there trying to figure out what the hunk of metal was. We even ran into a scrap metal man at a gas station, offering to buy it from us for $500. He didn't know what it was and we didn't tell him, we just hurried up and left!
Anyway, we had a great time and I hope I can meet Richard in the near future! I know the article mentioned about people describing about previous times they met the King, I mean when you say "I met you last year at Daytona, you signed my hat, you remember me??" Richard meets thousands of people everyday! But he has to remember when he gave away a flagstand....

Thanks, first off!
Unfortunately, I have to take a driver's ed course before I can get a license (Ga State Law). The high school offers a free driver's ed class, that will also get a discount on insurance. That is a small class, so now (this semester) is the first time that I've been able to get in. Even though I'll finish the class in October....they don't give out certificates until the last week of school in December. Meaning, the earliest I could get it would be the week of Christmas (And knowing the DDS, they'll probably be closed the whole week) or the week after, or wait until 2013! I guess it'll be more worth it. I could've taken the course online, but that costs lots of $$$.
Thank You everyone! I can't ask for friends and words that mean as much as all of these do!
At the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, we just announced Saturday that we are building a media library called 'The Jimmy Mosteller Memorial Racing Library'. Not only will it feature books, photos, programs, etc, etc, but it will also feature ALL of Jimmy Mosteller's personal achievements, awards, andmemorabilia. The Mosteller family has agreed to donate EVERYTHING!! We hope to have this new addition built by next year, as it will take a bit of change to completely add on another room to the museum.
Also...that was a greatarticleyou posted! I had no idea, that Red Vogt had any involvment with the Petty's. I know the last car he built was in 68', but I thought it was on the small scale. But why didn't Maurice or Dale build the car?? Were the three all busy dragging and old man Lee wanted to keep the Nascar operation alive or what?

Well, they (Swims) tore up the asphalt in 77', and from then on it was dirt. But from my knowledge, Buck only ran in the Grand National's in 79' and 80'.
