Farmer John Matthews Won Jacksonville's 1964 Leatherneck 150 as Car Owner Burned During Refueling

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks for the link Dave, that is the hot dog car from my very first races watched. My goodness it has been 47 yrs or so since I laid eyes on Farmer John's coupe. It is exactly as remembered except I think I have seen it run in blue as well. Maybe someone can tell me for sure did John race this coupe blue at any point. He used to kick Hoss Ellington, Richard Brickhouse, and Jackie Rogers butt every Sunday at the beach. Thanks Charles for the info on the Bill Duff reference. Now I know the lowdown on that after 47 yrs as well. Most people that I mention Bill Duff to have never saw him run and most have never heard of him either. Glad you do and did, thanks again.

Farmer John Matthews Won Jacksonville's 1964 Leatherneck 150 as Car Owner Burned During Refueling

Stock Car Racing History

Bill Duff from Tarboro, NC who led the first half was in 61 chev impala SS. I remember the car from When Bill brought it to the Carolina Beach Speeway around'64. Was supposedly an ex GN car and for some reason I am remembering it as being from Rex White , although I have no idea where I got that tidbit. Rex could say for sure.
I do remember the number as being 74.
Farmer John was running his 16 jr. Coupe in these years.i remember it being gold at one time and seems as if it was blue also at one time... Memory being tested going back that far. I wonder if Kenneth Simpkins is any relation to another Raleigh area driver, Glenn Simpkins? He always wore the overalls kinda become his trademark. Loved watching him run

Former Hickory Racer John Settlemyre Killed in Gun Battle

General

Wow this is a strange set of circumstances...I though I saw John listedas being deceased Friday but did not see anything about the circumstances. I remember John running Hickory and I believe that he ran some races in the old "Baby Grand" division around 1976 or '77.

Condolences to John's family and friends.

Racing History Minute - June 10, 1961

Stock Car Racing History

I have saw alot of reasons given for DNF over the years but have never saw anything like "door" before. I also would like to know those details. Only thing I could think of is maybe his car had a push so bad that he kept banging on the door so hard to signal the crew thatit fell off.

11 different winners in 11 races are what I dream of these days, THOSE REALLY WERE THE DAYS!...Wish that streak had started at Pocono yesterday but we know that is not going to happen. SinceNASCAR has made all the cars equalit nowseems as if there are only a very few that can win. Wonderhow that isdefined in the NASCAR dictionary, coincidence, talent, or oxymoron!

Thanks Tim

Henley Gray, one heck of a nice person and was a long time car owner and driver that never got any recognition but was always there. Did not realize Buddy Arrington was Cup racing that far back. Thanks Tim learned something from this one.

Bruton Says 70% Sure He'll Move Fall Charlotte Race to Las Vegas

Current NASCAR

Bruton can take his $7.00 beer, $6.00 a bottle water and his $12.00 chicken fingers to Vegas and stuff'em in the ''high rollers'' section. That place is WAY overbuilt for this region and it's economic geography.

As far as leaving a lttle something for Charlotte and Concord, hows nice intersection with maybe a small plaque designating where CMS USED TO BE... Enough with Bruton and his so-called broken promise agenda with Concord. They have give him the town as it is...BRUton enouh already, just takeyur ball and go. See ya on T.V.

UPDATE ON SAM ARD

General

It is so good to see Sam again...Great picture of him getting some R&R.. So glad he is still using his humor, I know Jo enjoys it. Thank you for the update Dr. Janice. If you would be so kind as to tell MS. Jo that I said hello and am still in Effingham if they ever need anything,I would certainly appreciate it.
