Carl Long: The Other Side of the Track

Current NASCAR

This is another example why I sport NOTHING with the symbol NASCAR on it, along with the fact that it is now embarrassing to be seen as supporting this dictatorship...Love racing but don't care for where the cup car racing has been led..Kinda like war, days upon days of boredom with about 30 seconds of excitement...Not enough return for my time...It always was about the Saturday night local short tracks and for me it still is!Carl Long, B.T.W., we both know you DO NOT owe NASCAR jack squat, they just say you do...Only kicker here being is that the ball belongs to Big Brother and he is crying wah wah, with Carl doing the suffering...

From an outward looking inward viewpoint it seems as if NASCAR has an extremely hard one for Carl for some reason....C'mon King NASCAR let the man make a living doing what he does by George. Where was Andy Rooney when we really needed him?

Work Horses

Stock Car Racing History

Dennis,

That Galaxy was one bad ride as you well remember. When Tommy finished with it there was not a panel on it that was not bent in some fashion..It was a real workhorse.

So glad that you have kept these clippings and have your past experiences and memories to share with us all, thanks so much for the information that you share.

Did You Ever Not Start a Race to Keep the Judge from Garnishing Your Winnings?

Stock Car Racing History

Johnny I remember (as I am sure that you do as well) Roy Tyner getting that same lesson from the law after a tire iron altercation against Sam Sommers at Myrtle Beach. Man did he ever do a number on Sam's head!

Did You Ever Not Start a Race to Keep the Judge from Garnishing Your Winnings?

Stock Car Racing History

I miss Terrible Tommy's shenanagins...Definitely not my favorite personality but man was he ever controversial and colorful...I remember thinking in 1985 how in the world did he manage to end up in a Cup car. After the Eric Freedlander scandal came to light it made a little more sense...Not that Tommy had anything to do with the financial dealings, just that this type car owner kinda sorta fits the image that was associated with Tommy, playing outside the rules!

Looking for Neil Bonnett's 1934 Coupe

Stock Car Racing History

Patsy, I remember Neil having a red 1934 Ford SEDAN. I first saw this car in North Wilkesboro in 1988 and actuallysat in it...He had this car in the pit area...If I remember correctlythis car was just finished and I seem to remeber this onehad a Rahmoc (Bob Rahilly) motor in it./?. This may or may not be the car that Kristen is talking about, don't know but I remember Neil as having this red '34 Sedan in that time period...Do not know what became of thisone, never saw it again.

Name This Famous Family

Stock Car Racing History

Dennis,

The car seems to be or at least looks the infamous MustangII from the mid to late 1970's...I suspect that this was a then called baby grand division car being the size of it...I know it is NOT him but it sure looks alot like Richard Howard from CMS at the front of the car with his hands in pockets...Really don't have a clue other than that.

What is Mike thinking? He could be thinking, ''I told you not to take my picture and now I am going to put that camera in a place where you will be most uncomfortable''...

All Time Greatest Dirt Racers

Stock Car Racing History

Don Macon and Glenn Simpkins, haven't heard those two names in years...Mark, you must be from around the N.C. mid-state, Raleigh perhaps. Don and Glenn were two of Farmer John Matthews toughest competitors. First saw them both run in Carolina Beach, N.C. back in '64 in coupes...At that time Don's car was red #4 if I remember correctly, John drove a blue Ford coupe #16 Jr. don't remember much about Glenn's car.
