3rd place LMS finisher J.E. Beard of Bailey, NC was a former Wilson County Speedway dirt track champion, whose father, Edsel Beard sold some of the coldest beer in NC (don't remember if he stocked Schafer ) at his little country store on NC Highway 581 between Bailey and Spring Hope. That's J.E. running to the inside of Butch Lindley and in front of Jimmy Hensley in the Dennis Beck photo below. If the "Flying 59" logo and paint color resemble Ray Hendrick's old Jack Tant/Clayton Mitchell "Flying 11" cars, that's because J.E. was at the time working for Tant in Littleton, NC building motors. He'd later build the winning motor for Lake Speed's only Winston Cup win, at Darlington in the Rebel 500.
