1972 Bubba Tatum Late Model Sportsman TV Commercial - Southside Speedway - Fidelity National Bank - RR's G.T. Nolen's Car

Stock Car Racing History

Long before many corporate sponsors utilized NASCAR GN/Cup auto racing or drivers in television commercials, Virginia's tiny Fidelity National Bank   headquartered in Lynchburg, Va . in 1972 featured the 1966 NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Chevelle owned by RR's G.T. (Tommy) Nolen and driven by the late Bubba Tatum of Jetersville, Virginia in TV commercial spots filmed at Richmond's (Midlothian) weekly 1/3-mile asphalt Southside Speedway . The old wooden & cinderblock grandstands hadn't yet been condemned and replaced with aluminum and the infield was a rough looking place that had yet to be improved. But, I sure did love that ole gal and the wonderful Friday nights I spent there watching some of the finest stock car drivers ever. By the time these commercial spots were filmed in 1972, the steel boiler plate wall constructed by Emanuel Zervakis had been in place for several seasons and taken many licks. The track began in the late 40s as Nelson Royall's dirt Royall Speedway and was renamed Southside Speedway by new owner J.M. Wilkinson in 1959. Note the Playboy bunny logo on trunk lid. Today's sanitary NASCAR would frown on that I suppose, G.T.

Racing History Minute - March 11, 1979

Stock Car Racing History

The Eastern 150 NASCAR National Championship Late Model Sportsman race originally scheduled as the Saturday companion event to the 1979 Sunday Richmond 400 was actually run on Saturday March 3, 1979 at Richmond while the Cup and Baby Grand cars were at Rockingham. Former Grand National Rookie of the Year, Bill Dennis of Glen Allen, Virginia won that race. The Baby Grand cars wound up racing as the Saturday preliminary race a week later.

Here's the LMS coverage from the Fredericksburg paper and a few David Allio photos of the March 10-11, 1979 Richmond races:

Racing History Minute - March 11, 1979

Stock Car Racing History

Just imagine... snow flurries on the race day morning of Richmond's postponed event,  yet every seat was sold and fans had to be turned away at the gate. Many of those fans, I'm sure, wanted to be on hand for another Cale - Donnie dustup, but fans being turned away is a far cry from the current days of tearing down grandstands.

Yep, Woody. I guess I first became familiar with Carwile because of his WXGI Sunday shows immediately preceding the race broadcasts back in the 60s.

Howard "Mad Man Dapper Dan" Hughes' Half Moon House on Cherokee Road with a view of the James. Architect Haigh Jamgochian. The car dealer wanted something "out of this world" for wife Ruby 3 daughters. Dapper would sell cars also repossess them--garnering a certain enmity from former patrons. So his house was way off the road without trees as he wanted clear lines of sight. The house was sheathed in crumpled copper that would with years of oxidation turn green like moss on river rocks.

Hey, Woody... found a 2005 Style Weekly story about Mad Man Dapper Dan's house being demolished. Here's an excerpt, along with photos of his original Church Hill used car lot and the later West Broad Street lot nears Sears... both with the famous "I"d give them away, but my wife won't let me!" signs.

Moon House Is Demolished

Jamgochian designed the Moon House for a used-car salesman in 1965. Howard H. Hughes (not the eccentric billionaire) wanted a home that would reflect his flamboyant personality, and he specified something "out of this world," to which Jamgochian responded with a crescent-moon-shaped structure sheathed in glass and crumpled copper. Hughes, known in business as Mad Man Dapper Dan , wanted a fallout shelter near the pool, a large vault bolted to the floor of his office, and several hidden panels and secret places for storing valuables. His poker games and parties were legendary, and the house was a big draw with its spectacular terrace and views across the James River.

"Everybody would want to be invited to the house," recalls Sandy Beatley, who with her husband, Irv, bought the property from the Hughes family in the 1980s. "It was one of a kind — strange-looking from the outside but lovely inside. And oh, we had fun living there."

Woody, I well remember Dapper Dan on the opposite side of Broad St. near Sears and CF Sauer. He had a very modernistic home overlooking the James River that we sed to see as boys when we'd ride bikes thru Windsor Farms and "mess around" down by Bowsher's Dam.
