Yes to history.
An old friend tells me this happened on lap 68 of the 2010 Sears Point race.
You can be sure that #55 NAPA Toyota was at fault trying to figure how to get a Lucky Dog free pass cause he wasn't too good in the tall grass, i.e. "Don't run with the big dogs if you can't pi$$ in the tall grass."
When we raced at the magnificent Wilson County Speedway half-mile dirt track in eastern North Carolina the 70s, several members of the Upchurch family raced with us. When the American Legion made the hugely unpopular decision to tear down the track on the fairgrounds that they owned, Edward Upchurch built a much smaller dirt track literally in his backyard just up the road off U.S. Highway 301 at Elm City, NC.
County Line Raceway gets its name from the fact that it nearly straddles the Wilson and Nash County borders. The Bell & Bell Vintage Modified Series that includes RR members has visited this family oriented facility.
On July 28, the University of North Carolina Public Television show North Carolina Weekend did a short segment featuring the track and its appeal to families. Dirt track racing is alive and well in the old Upchurch backyard.
On July 29, 1984 - at Alabama International Motor Speedway, Dale Earnhardt drove the Wrangler Jeans #3 Chevy to the flag ahead of Buddy Baker in the Wood Brothers #21 Ford to win the Talladega 500. It was the first win for Earnhardt driving for Childress. The pair would win 6 NASCAR Winston Cup Championships together before Earnhardt's death in the 2001 Daytona 500.
You know I am definitely not mechanical, but'd I'd guess the engine in the photo #3 is a Ford because of the twin 4- barrel carbs Big Bill allowed Ford in 1966 after disallowing the SOHC Ford engine. I would speculate that these are not Junior Johnson crewmen because of the KFC bucket and Junior's Holly Farms affiliation.
Sorry to hear this news. I always think of the tragic loss of his mother at Talladega in 1977.
