GOING TO DAYTONA back in the day

Stock Car Racing History

The driver is an inductee of the Eastern Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame:

Elton Hildreth

One of the most colorful drivers to ever compete in the Modifieds, Elton Wild Man Hildreth is best known for his exploits in his orange and black No. 16-J, a 1937 Chevrolet coupe that was powered by a small-block Chevy engine.

A resident of Bridgeton, New Jersey, Hildreth actually began his racing career in open-cockpit cars back in the 1930s. Then, as an alignment shop/garage owner and Nash dealer with his Hildreth Motors, he got involved with NASCARs new late-model racing series.

From 1950 through 1954, Hildreth ran a virtually-stock No. 1 Nash in most of NASCARs early Grand National (Cup Series) events. With this underpowered car he competed on half-mile dirt tracks, the famed old Daytona Beach-Road Course (where he once led the race with two laps to go before running out of gas on the last lap) and on the legendary Darlington International Raceway. In all, he had seven Top-10s in 51 starts with his best finish of fourth in a 200-lapper on the old half-mile Bloomsburg (Pa.) Fairgrounds in 1953.

Hildreth also devised a series of chassis, suspension and engine parts to help make his Nash more competitive, but these were ultimately cited by NASCAR as not being legal for use.

In 1955, Hildreth opted to run the Modifieds and after some success in Neal Williams black No. 717 1937 Ford two-door sedan, he began to field his own orange and black No. 16-J 1937 Chevrolet coupe in 1958.

The various editions of the 16-Js which always carried a small American flag whose wooden shaft was mounted on the right-front of the car were Hildreths signature rides. Although small-block powered, they were fast, well-handling machines that gave him the edge at many of the tracks that he visited. And while Hildreth would occasionally change his engines triple-carburetion intake to fuel-injection, he would always return to his original setup.

A skillful and tough competitor and one of the best traffic drivers of his era, Hildreth was a top runner at such old New Jersey tracks as Vineland Speedway, where he won an all-time record of 33 races; Old Bridge Speedway and Alcyon Speedway in Pitman. He was also tough to beat at the old Wilmington (Del.) Speedway and at the old half-mile Nazareth (Pa.) Raceway.

Hildreth also won a major 100-lap event in 1960 on the old one-mile asphalt Trenton (N.J.) International Speedway and he was a regular at the big events on both the dirt and asphalt incarnations of the old one-mile Langhorne (Pa.) Speedway.

The Wild Man billing that Hildreth enjoyed was something that came to him honestly as he was not afraid to add a little bit of color and excitement to what was taking place on or off the track. It was not unusual for the forever 39-year-old racer to place a pair of Dixie cups under his shirt, slip on a wig and roll up his pant legs or put on a print dress so that he could compete in a Powder Puff Derby. And when it came time for the kids to ride around the track at Nazareth with their favorite driver, Hildreths 16-J always had a long line of eager youngsters who were anxious to have him do that job.

Hildreth even took driver comfort to a new level on a hot August Sunday in 1964 when he drove his No. 16-J in a major race at Trenton wearing nothing more than his helmet, a white athletic under shirt, a pair of white boxer shorts, and his shoes and socks.

When sanctioning wars looked like they might cause him a problem, he disguised himself by wearing a working mans billed cap, a Vandyke beard, a long-sleeved work shirt and blue overalls and raced a No. 5 1937 Ford coupe at Langhorne under the assumed identity of the corn-cob-pipe-smoking Hoss Hayes from Lexington, Kentucky.

The highly-popular Hildreth (born on October 5, 1917) retired from racing in 1973.

Elton Hildreth, a Nash dealer out of Bridgeton, N.J., hauled his #1 Nash Ambassador down to Daytona with an identical Nash passenger car. Hildreth started the Feb. 21 Daytona Beach race 44th in the field of 62. He managed to make modest headway during the 160-miler, but ran out of fuel a couple laps from the finish. Hildreth was credited with a 38th-place finish and pocketed $25 in prize money.

July 4: Three wins for The King

Stock Car Racing History

Here's a pretty good NASCAR.com piece about the three women drivers in that 1977 Firecracker 400 won by Richard Petty.

'77 Firecracker last time females in same Cup race
Three women competed, including GP notable Lombardi
By Mark Aumann, NASCAR.COM
November 5, 2009

As the Danica Patrick saga finally may be nearing resolution, perhaps it's time to look back at the 1977 Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway, the last time three female drivers competed in the same Cup race.

In NASCAR's early days, female drivers were more common. Sara Christian, Louise Smith and Ethel Mobley -- sister to the famous Flock brothers -- were all regular participants in the Grand National schedule. But by the mid-'50s, it became rare to see a woman behind the wheel of a stock car in NACAR's premier division.

That changed when Humpy Wheeler enticed Janet Guthrie into running the 1976 World 600 at Charlotte after she failed to find enough speed to make the grid at Indianapolis that May. And the next summer, not only did Guthrie and Charlotte banking executive Lynda Ferreri show up at Daytona with a car, but so did Christine Beckers -- born in German-occupied Belgium and a veteran of European sports-car racing -- and Italian native Lella Lombardi.

Born in 1941 near Turin, Maria Grazia Lombardi had a passion for sports at an early age, but her family didn't own a car. Anecdotal evidence suggests she was intrigued by sports cars while being rushed to the hospital in one after suffering a broken nose in a handball game while as a teenager. At some point later on, she scraped together enough money for driving lessons, practiced for several months with her boyfriend's car, then purchased a second-hand Fiat.

The late Lella Lombardi, circa 1975

She got her start in rally racing, first as a navigator, then as driver. Catching the eye of manufacturing executives at Alfa Romeo, she landed a factory ride in the Italian Touring Car Championship series, finishing third at Palermo. Eventually, she wound up in single-seat, open-wheel cars, winning the 1973 Ford Mexico series championship, then stepping up into Formula 5000.

Emboldened by her success, Lombardi decided to try Formula 1 in 1974. Driving a year-old chassis, Lombardi failed to qualify for the British Grand Prix. But with backing from a multi-millionaire count, she wound up on the March factory team the following season -- in a car that was second-tier but more competitive -- and finished sixth of the eight cars still running at the finish of the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, still the only female driver to earn points in a Grand Prix race. She followed that with a seventh-place finish in the German Grand Prix, another race with heavy attrition.

Lombardi started the 1976 season with a 14th-place finish at Brazil but was out of the ride shortly thereafter when Ronnie Peterson returned to March from Lotus. She then attempted to run a handful of races for RAM Racing, finishing 12th at Austria in her final Grand Prix start.

5. A.J. Foyt Chevrolet
6. Donnie Allison Chevrolet
7. Buddy Baker Ford
31. Lella Lombardi Chevrolet
37. Christine Beckers Ford
40. Janet Guthrie Chevrolet

That led Lombardi to Daytona in the summer of 1977. She landed a ride in Charles Dean's No. 05 Chevrolet, which was sponsored by Bearfinder, a company which manufactured radar detectors. Peter Knab had driven that car to a 12th-place finish earlier in the year at Talladega. Lombardi qualified a respectable 29th out of 41 cars which took the green flag, nine places behind Guthrie's Kelly Girl Chevy and eight in front of Beckers, driving one of Junie Donlavey's Fords.

Surprisingly, Guthrie was the first to drop out, experiencing engine problems almost from the start, taking her car to the garage after just 11 laps and winding up 40th. Beckers retired shortly thereafter with brake issues after 33 laps and was scored in 37th place.

Lombardi was still running deep in the pack but battling transmission issues when the race was red-flagged just after halfway because of a thundershower. The car finally gave out once the race resumed two hours later, and Lombardi was credited with a 31st-place finish.

Richard Petty, who built a huge advantage only to see it wiped out by the rain, hooked up with Bobby Allison in a two-car draft once the race resumed and steadily pulled away for a 17-second margin of victory over Darrell Waltrip. Benny Parsons, whose car was trailing smoke the entire race, finished third, as only seven cars made the entire 400-mile distance.

Guthrie would go on to run 21 more races, including four top-10s, before her stock-car racing career came to an end in 1980, but for Beckers and Lombardi, the 1977 Firecracker 400 would be their only Cup appearance. Lombardi would return to Europe and sports-car racing, co-driving the winning BMW at Pergusa and Vallelunga in 1979. She continued to race into the '80s, mainly competing in the European Touring Car Championship.

Lombardi was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1992, a few weeks shy of her 49th birthday.

Somebody better rush right out and tell Racing Reference that Richard Childress is NOT the owner of ANY Nationwide cars for 2012.... at least according to NASCAR.

So Morgan Shepherd is the Car Owner of the #3 Driven by Austin Dillon?

Current NASCAR

I think I started a timely discussion the other day when I said not to trust the car owners listed by the various stat sources for bygone years in racing.

Now I see that car owner Morgan Shepherd has been docked points along with driver Austin Dillon for the Kentucky winning Nationwide #3 car being too low.

Stupid me. I'd have sworn Austin was driving for his grandfather, Richard Childress. Now I discover that Morgan Shepherd is his car owner.

However, when I check 2012 Car Owner stats at Racing Reference, the only Nationwide Series driver listed for Nationwide Series owner Morgan Shepherd is Morgan Shepherd. Not an Austin Dillon to be found driving for Morgan Shepherd in the Racing Reference database of 2012 car owners.

Now, what am I supposed to believe? Who is the car owner and how do we correctly track that owner?

Penalty puts rookie Dillon out of Nationwide points lead

Austin Dillon's lead in the Nationwide Series point standings was short-lived after NASCAR handed down penalties to his team on Monday for a rules infraction that occurred this past weekend at Kentucky Speedway.

Following his first career Nationwide win in Friday's 300-miler at Kentucky, Dillon's No. 3 Chevrolet failed post-race inspection when officials discovered the rear of his car was too low.

As a result, Dillon was penalized with a loss of six points. The rookie driver held a two-point lead over his Richard Childress Racing teammate, Elliott Sadler, but Sadler is now on top by four markers.

Dillon's crew chief, Danny Stockman Jr., was fined $10,000 and placed on probation for the remainder of the year. Morgan Shepherd, who is listed as the car owner, received a six-point deduction as well.

Team owner Richard Childress, who is Dillon's grandfather, said over the weekend at Kentucky that a faulty rear jack bolt was to blame for the car being below the minimum height requirement.

Dillon led all but eight of the 200 laps and crossed the finish line 9.8 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Kurt Busch.

Last month, NASCAR penalized Sadler's No. 2 RCR team for the same infraction that occurred at Iowa Speedway. Sadler was docked six points and his crew chief, Luke Lambert, received a $10,000 fine after their car did not meet the minimum rear car heights.
