Another Thing I Miss About Not Racing on July 4th in Daytona

Stock Car Racing History

I will save all the congratulations to come for Monday when I am sure we'll have a special post about a special person's 75th birthday.

But, we used to always be able to celebrate that day at the track in Daytona on July 2nd then race on Independence Day.

I still miss "America's Largest Independence Day Celebration," as The Firecracker 400 was billed for many years when re raced at Daytona on July 4th.

And, I'll chime in Monday to wish a happy birthday to that very special man.

Kudos to Cincinnati Children's Choir National Anthem Rendition at KY Fri. Night

Current NASCAR

Just 115 miles from Patsy Cline's birthplace in Gore, Virginia to Kate Smith's birthplace in Greenville, Virginia, both just off I-81. Continue a little farther south on I-81 to Bristol, Virginia area around Mace's Spring and Nickelsville and you'll be in Carter family country. A lot of great singers were born around the I-81 corridor through Virginia.

Hard to beat those Virginia girls. Kate was born in the Augusta County town of Greenville, Virginia.

The Cincinnati Children's Choir performed a a stirring rendition of our country's National Anthem before the Friday night Nationwide race at Kentucky.

It was one of the best I've heard at a track and much preferable to those "artist" renditions.

Hats off to those youngsters and their instructors.

IF YOU CANT DODGE IT OUTRUN IT

Current NASCAR

You're right, Tommie - the former "Duck Boy" you cheer wasn't even "Fertilizer Boy." He turned into the UPS "Delivery Boy," but Denny Hamlin's delivery service outraced him Saturday night. When I saw that ugly UPS brown color, I felt like Dale Jarrett should have been lurking in the shadows.

I, too, however, like Cousin Carl. He's a talented driver and extremely well spoken.

IF YOU CANT DODGE IT OUTRUN IT

Fell asleep on the couch with less than 15 laps to go wondering if there was enough fuel on board that mighty Miller Lite lightning bolt! When I awakened TNT's programming had long since reverted to something that drove me straight to the bedroom.

I was awake when Tony the Pony and his mount once again proved his team (or Hendrick's engine building subsidiary) hasn't figured out something regarding that EFI.

I was happy to hear that Brad won. Thought it was a pretty uneventful, boring race. Little action or close quarters racing. That track just doesn't seem to promote long term exciting side-by-side and nose-to-tail racing.

Two things struck me about the telecast:

1) The announcement by Denny Hamlin that he had re-upped a long term deal with Joe Gibbs and FedEx 15 months before his current contracts expired.

2) The Bristol Motor Speedway commercial trying to sell tix to the August night race. The ad proclaims that the track didn't listen to drivers, crew or teams, but only to the fans to bring them a track the fans wanted. Well, they didn't ask this fan. I still want ASPHALT.

LUCKY Roads IN GEORGIA

Stock Car Racing History

Wahoo wa...

But that time began in 1966, when it was an ALL male school, except for the graduate school of nursing. That's why we made "road trips" to all the girls' colleges around the state.

There was also a male University President and a male Chairman of the Board of Visitors. Not a female Chairwoman or President like the one who was fired week before last and reinstated last week.

I'm afraid Mr. Jefferson's University has become pretty Mickey Mouse.
