Our member Dave Redman of Smithfield, VA posted several pictures on his profile page several years ago of the #90 1964 Fairlane that Junie Donlavey built in 1968 for Sonny Hutchins to drive at Southside and South Boston Speedways in the first year of Late Model Sportsman. Note the cars carry the familiar "S" on the rear quarter signifying Swansboro Motor Company and the always amazing Hendrick Construction Co. on the front fender, owned by Sonny's biggest rival, Ray Hendrick!

NB, I wondered the same thing. Junie used to take a #90 Starliner to Daytona for Sonnyin the familiar blue livery. In 1968, the first year of Late Model Sportsman, Junie had a little #90 Fairlane for Sonny that ran the Virginia tracks. Jack Bilmeyer (who had a Greenville, NC Ford dealership and later headed American Honda), a good friend of Junie'shad a near identical #90 Fairlaneright down to Junie's paint scheme that ran at Wilson County Speeday dirt track.

Ricky, you've got me scratching my head on this one. I'm sure I knew the answer back in 1968, but darned if I have any recollection today. Interestingly, 1968 was the very first year of the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Division and Lennie's fellow Virginia competitor, Joe Henry Thurman of Rocky Mount won the first National Points Title in the division that year. Lennie had finished 2nd in National Sportsman points to Rene Charland in 1965, the only year he cracked the top-10 in national points. I look forward to one of our members providing the answer as to whose car Lennie was piloting in that 1968 inaugural Daytona Late Model Sportsman race.

Withdrawal is not getting easier

General

For all the moaning and groaning I do about how racing is not what it used to be and how today's crop of announcers don't get it, I find myself once again beginning to suffer withdrawal symptoms due to the lack of racing. How many days 'till Daytona?

Oh, I know there's a smattering of NFL playoff games on tv this weekend and I'm gonna tune in for a little while to Houston and Cincy just to see how those rookie qbs fare. There's even a couple of college football games, but it's hard to get psyched up over a 6-6 team playing a 7-5 team in a bowl game. I pulled for Clemson this week for the 2nd time in my life. If you keep up, you know I didn't bring them the same luck as I did the one other time I pulled for them 30 years ago when they won a national championship.

What I really dread is that sports wasteland between the end of the NFL playoffs and the SuperBowl. I wouldn't cross the street to attend an NBA basketball game and I'm sure not gonna watch on tv. The sports anthology shows will be there again with arm wrestling and figure skating.

I got a sampling ofthe dreaded (for me) sports season to come when I looked at the Charlotte Observer TV sports listing for this weekend. These are the scheduled telecasts besides the NFL playoffs and the two college football games in the Charlotte market:

* High School Boys Basketball - 2 telecasts

* Men's College Basketball - 19

* Women's College Basketball - 8

* NBA Basketball - 2

* NBA Development League Basketball - 1

* Golf - 4

* Mixed Martial Arts - 1

* High School Football - 1

* Men's Soccer - 8

* Coaches Shows - 8 (Is there anything worse than a coaches show, even if it's your team?)

* Rodeo - 1

There are two motorsports events in my tv listings. First is the AMA SuperCross at Anaheim. I actually worked that event in January 1984 and we drew a then record crowd to Gene Autry's Anaheim Stadium for the Wrangler SuperCross Series event. Not something I want to see on tv, though.

The other motorsports listing in the Charlotte paper is the Dakar rally at 1:30 a.m. on NBCSP. Probably gonna miss that, too.

I'm kinda wondering.... between Jeff and Dustin and all the other brainpower at RR, could we maybe put a little countdown clock to the opening of Daytona Speedweeks in the corner of the page? I promise I will never moan and groan again about the crummy racing or the crummy announcers.

Gone but not forgotten

Another lament to the age of cookie cutter racetracks from a YouTube post, one of literally hundreds of such compilations on that site.

By the way, the formerly bankrupt Bi-Lo grocery chain of Mauldin, SC purchased the bankrupt Winn-Chain of Jacksonville, FL last week and will continue to operate the remaining Winn-Dixie stores under that name. That #60 Beef People Roush/Martin Busch car was about unbeatable.
