R.I.P. Frankie Burnham - South Mills, NC - 1966 NASCAR Virginia State Sportsman Champion

General

Jack Carter posted on his blog and on Racing Through History of the passing Sunday of longtimeshort track competitor Frankie Burnham of South Mills, NC. Frankie was a regular competitor at Virginia's Langley Field Speedway, Southside Speedway and dirt Richmond Fairgrounds, Martinsville as well as numerous Carolina tracks, including RAMBI at Myrtle Beach back in the day wheeling his #00. In 1990 I had the pleasure of being on hand when Frankie was inducted into the Strawberry Hill Mod Squad at Richmond, honoring all drivers who competed in NASCAR State Fair Championship Races on the old 1/2-mile dirt Richmond track. Frankie was the 1966 NASCAR Virginia State Sportsman Champion . R.I.P. Frankie. Another great racer from my youth has passed.

Our RR member "Coastal" Jack Walker has a photo of Frankie's Chevy Modified #00 that Jack took at RAMBI in 1962 posted on his Carolina Race Place website. This is a link to his website photo:

Kurt Busch Seeing Psychologist "To Become Better Person"

NASCAR's Kurt Busch seeing sports psychologist

By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer 1 hour ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) Kurt Busch, fined $50,000 last week by NASCAR for verbally abusing a reporter, said Thursday he's seeing a sports psychologist to address what he described as "personal issues."

"I need to be a better person on the radio, to the team, as a leader," said Busch, who began working with the psychologist two months ago. "It's personal issues, of course, and working with a sports psychologist, I've gotten obviously a small grasp, but there's obviously bigger things that I need to accomplish and things can't happen overnight."

Busch's temper has long been documented, and his explosions on his in-car radio are notorious in NASCAR. He's had other incidents with media members this season, and NASCAR cited a pattern of behavior in fining him last week.

Busch was caught by his in-car camera making an obscene gesture as he drove into the garage at Homestead early in the season finale because of a transmission problem. A fan also videotaped him being verbally abusive to an ESPN reporter as he waited to be interviewed live.

The video was posted on YouTube, and both Penske Racing and sponsor Shell/Pennzoil said in statements they were disappointed by Busch's behavior.

Busch said Thursday during an industry luncheon that he was upset at Homestead when he realized he was guaranteed to finish 11th of the 12 drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. The ceremony is held in Las Vegas, his hometown, and the last two drivers in the Chase field don't have a role in Friday's awards show.

Busch and younger brother Kyle finished 11th and 12th.

Busch also said he was upset when the reporter, ESPN's Dr. Jerry Punch, informed him a part of his transmission had sailed into champion Tony Stewart's car.

"He was the first to tell me that news, and the flash that went through my mind just before that was I'm going to finish 11th 11th is the first loser when you come to Las Vegas," Busch said. "Then I realize my car is taking away a shot at Tony's championship."

Stewart recovered from the damage to win the race and win his third championship.

Busch has had a rough month to end his season. He ran out of gas at Texas, while leading at Phoenix, and had the transmission problem at Homestead. Crew chief Steve Addington also quit two days after the season ended to take the same job next season with Stewart.

Now, Busch is looking for his third crew chief in four years and wants someone within Penske Racing to be promoted into the position. He cited the chemistry between teammate Brad Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe, who was promoted from the Nationwide Series. Penske signed both Keselowski and Wolfe to contract extensions Thursday.

But he indicated the new crew chief will have a challenge in controlling the driver. He also said making progress on his personal growth is a priority.

"You can work 364 days on being positive and building toward a better platform, and it can take just one day to knock it all back," he said. "I need to harness what happens in the race car and keep it there, and then I need to step out of the car and understand that if we didn't reach our goal for that day or that moment, that it's going to be alright at the end."

1st Stock Car In-Car Camera - 1952

General

After seeing the post of our member Ray Lamm being a guest host on Joe Kelly's Richmond radio show this week I looked at Joe's "Let's Talk Racing" Facebook page to see what he might have new. Joe, you may remember is the gentleman who got me a copy of the rare 1951 recording of "Racing at Royall Speedway." Joe is a treasure who I'd love to see Bopper and Jeff have on Racing Through History sometime. Joe announced at many tracks, some long forgotten, promoted Southside Speedway and raced motorcycles at Occoneechee. Well, as usual, I wasn't disappointed in what Joe had posted. Right there was a rare story photocopied from the September 1952 Speed Age chronicling what may have been the first attempt to shoot motion picture footage inside a moving stock car during an actual race. Again, the story takes place at Richmond's Royall Speedway (today's Southside Speedway) in the Summer of 1952 during a Richmond Stock Car Racing Association feature. Captain William Clark is shooting 16mm footage from inside Runt Harris' #90 Junie Donlavey modified with both a stationary mounted camera and a handheld motion picture camera. The story details wrecks by Emanuel Zervakis and Ray Hendrick, both in Tadlock Smiley's Auto Sales cars, with Buck Mason (of the Crazy Joe Maphis song) sweeping by three wrecked cars at the end to win. I don't know if any of this will post or not, but it is absolutely fascinating. If you can read the following all the credit goes to Joe Kelly in Richmond. I apologize in advance for the 4 pages being out of sequence due to my posting difficulties.

HEY PATTY---THIS SHOULD MAKE YOU SMILE

Stock Car Racing History

Tim, I think everybody likes the Keselowski family. In all of my years of attending races there are three races that stand out in my mind head and shoulders above all others in ranking the genuine response, popularityand happiness level of fellow NASCAR competitors to a particular driver/owner win. They are:

* Junie Donlavey's Only Career Winston Cup car owner win, with Jody Ridley driving at Dover.

* Dale Earnhardt's Daytona 500 win

* Bob Keselowki's Lone NASCAR win at Richmond in the 1997 Craftsman Truck Series driving for brother Ron.

Driving for his brother Ron, on September 4, 1997 in the Virginia is for Lovers 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Richmond International Raceway, Bob Keselowski, at age 45, beat a field laced with Winston Cup and Busch Series drivers and drove his Mopar Performance Dodge Ram to victory lane. It was a huge win on a huge racing weekend that also included the Busch Series and Winston Cup Series and record crowds at all three races under the lights with a national tv broadcast. The race was so big that 16 trucks failed to qualify. Several of those trucks that didn't make the show were driven by national champions in several NASCAR touring series as well as some NASCAR regional weekly champions. One truck that couldn't make the field was driven by a fellow named Kevin Harvick.

When the swirling smoke had cleared from beneath the MUSCO lights, the brothers Keselowski had beaten trucks owned by Rick Hendrick, Richard Childress, Darrell Waltrip, Ken Schrader, Jack Roush, Petty Enterprises, Dale Earnhardt, Geoff Bodine and Ernie Irvan, among others. The Richmond crowd, always fans of the underdog, went wild. Drivers, owners, and crewman poured from the Busch Series and Winston Cup garage to congratulate the Keselowskis who had taken their underfunded team to a huge win at a Winston Cup track against hugely funded teams.

That win would be the only NASCAR win recorded by the Keselowski family until the arrival of Bob's son and Ron's nephew on the scene. His name is Brad Keselowski and he carries with him a racing work ethic that has a family history. He isn't a pretty boy. He hasn't had it all handed to him on a silver platter. I am proud to have been at the first NASCAR win recorded by the Keselowski family. I am certain it will not be the last.

Penske signs NASCAR driver Keselowski to extension

By JENNA FRYER
AP Auto Racing Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Brad Keselowski was rewarded for a breakthrough season at NASCAR's top level with a contract extension from Penske Racing for both the driver and his crew chief.

The team said Thursday the extensions for Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe were for multiple years, although the specific length and financial terms were not disclosed. Team owner Roger Penske called the duo a "special pairing."

"Although Brad, Paul and the No. 2 team fell short of winning the Cup Series title this season, we know they will continue to be championship contenders for years to come," he said.

In his second season with Penske, Keselowski won three races and earned a berth in his first Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. He did it by winning three races - after breaking his ankle in a crash while testing - to climb his way through the standings in a late summer push to make the Chase.

Keselowski ended the season ranked a career-best fifth in the final standings. Penske teammate Kurt Busch, the 2004 series champion, finished 11th.

Keselowski first teamed with Wolfe in 2010 in the Nationwide Series, where they won six races en route to the championship. The team also set a series record with 26 top-five finishes, and by completing all but one lap over the entire season.

Wolfe was then moved to the Cup team, and helped turn around the No. 2 Dodge after a bumpy first season for Keselowski in NASCAR's elite division.

"It's great to know that Paul and I will continue to work together to bring wins and championships to Penske Racing and its sponsors," said Keselowski. "We've definitely built something special here with this team and we'll continue to get better to reach our goals. I'm already fired up about 2012 and the future with the Blue Deuce."

Wolfe said he had instant chemistry with Keselowski.

"It's been a great experience working with Brad - we just seemed to click right away - and we will continue to build on the consistency and success we've experienced with the team," Wolfe said. "We're already working hard to get ready for another run at the championship next season."

Keselowski has also become one of NASCAR's most vocal drivers, and he was fined $25,000 by series officials two weeks ago for comments he made critical of electronic fuel injection.
