Competition Proven

Trivia

Don't have Tom Cotter's book. Guessing the Georgia 500 at Middle Georgia Raceway, Macon, GA on Nov. 7, 1971 won by Bobby Allison in a '71 Ford was last win for Holman-Moody.

Ever loose something at the track thats vital???

General

BB, I remember that very well. Jim Freeman took the rap and a lot of kidding over that. It was 1986 before the Winston 500.

Seems very clear to me. Menard took a dive.

Just had a brainstorm.... maybe RCR intends to steal the Aflac sponsorship from Roush?

Remembering Jimmy Pardue and the 1964 season

General

1964 was a deadly and tragic year in both stock cars and open wheel. The resultingdevelopment of the tire safety inner liner and bladder fuel cell, as well as the multiplepoint safety harness are innovations that have saved an untold number of lives since. We lost some terrific drivers in 1964.

CUP: Weather Threatens Chase Opener
Forecast calls for 50 percent chance of rain as NASCAR hopes to begin the run for the championship

Its race day, and the Chase is on.

Well, maybe.

Weather is threatening to toss a dark cloud into the mix as NASCAR hopes to start its 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup today at Chicagoland Speedway.

Light rain was falling in the speedway area southwest of metro Chicago Sunday morning. The cell producing that rain is expected to move on by midmorning, but the forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of afternoon showers and an 80 percent chance of rain and thundershowers tonight.

The GEICO 400 is scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m. (ET).

If the race is postponed today, it would be rescheduled for Monday. Mondays forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of morning showers.

When the race gets the green flag, 12 drivers will begin pursuit of the Sprint Cup championship, a prize won for the past five seasons by Jimmie Johnson, who, of course, is in the mix once again.

Matt Kenseth, one of the dozen, won the pole Saturday with a speed of 183.243 mph, a strong indication that Kenseth and his Roush Fenway Racing team have a super-strong car for todays race. Kenseth rarely qualifies well. The pole is only the sixth of his career.

Five other Chasers will be starting in the top 10. Kurt Busch qualified third, Ryan Newman fourth, Carl Edwards fifth, Brad Keselowski sixth and Kyle Busch ninth.

Three Chase drivers had speed problems in qualifying and will start the race deep in the pack. Tony Stewart will start 26th, Denny Hamlin 27th and Kevin Harvick 30th.

Other Chase drivers are Johnson (12th), Jeff Gordon (23rd) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (19).

Kyle Busch and Harvick start the Chase atop the point standings as a result of their four regular-season victories. They have a three-point edge over third-place Gordon.

Michael Waltrip Confirms Talks with Bowyer & "Quality Sponsor"

Clint Bowyer may have new home with MWR

Friday, Sep. 16, 2011

JOLIET, Ill. - Clint Bowyer may have a new home in the Sprint Cup Series with Michael Waltrip Racing.

Team owner Michael Waltrip confirmed on Friday the organization has had very productive conversations with Bowyer and a quality sponsor about running in the Cup series next season.

Today, however, we dont have anything finalized and were not in a position to make any formal announcements, Waltrip said in a statement. Our goal has never changed.

Rob (Kauffman, team co-owner) and I want to continue to improve the competitiveness of our team and be a consistent winner at NASCARs highest level. Pursuing Chase-proven personnel, including drivers, has been a priority.

Last week, Bowyer all-but admitted his tenure at Richard Childress Racing would be over at seasons end.

In five previous fulltime seasons in Cup, Bowyer has four wins and has finished 10th or higher in the series standings three times, including a career-best third in 2007

Southern National Speedway Auction Oct. 5 - See Big Fight Video Featuring Scott Riggs

General

Those boys at Southern National made Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick at Darlington look like a couple of amateur hour contestants. In the 1994 Southern National video below, Scott Riggs (remember him) spins race leader Milton Cook, who is struck by another car at the start/finish line which erupts in flame. Cook continues around the track and hits the stopped car of Riggs from behind (first hit) and then backs into him, before the drivers exit and start fisticuffs... all the while the car is blazing away at the starting line. Riggs should have at least gotten 10 extra points for the Ray Hendrick lookalike paint scheme!

My nephew used to own a truck team and also drove there. Denny Hamlin is a former champ. Hurts to see a place like that go under. It drew many of the same fans who used to attend the Wilson County Speedway dirt track.
