TV Shows I miss

General

The Thunder Series was outstanding. Even the NASCAR Winter Heat deal from Tucson gave us good racing in the "off season" with new names to most of us. That's where Benny Parsons spotted Greg Biffle and recommended him for big time racing.

MRN vs ESPN2 Announcers

General

Years ago, in the sixties.... WXGI Radio in Richmond carried every race that was broadcast in NASCAR... by Universal Racing Network, American Racing Network and much later, MRN when it came to be.It's interesting now to recall, but Paul Sawyer at Richmond told me Bill France asked him to stay with Hank Schoolfield's URN so it wouldn't look like Daytona was building another monopoly. WXGI was also the station that carried Indy on Memorial Day. It also had several racing related shows, one on Sunday morning before the races and one every afternoon, called "The 5th Turn." Remember, this was in the early 60s... Richmond was a hot racing town... at one time we had GN races each year at two different tracks on opposite sides of the river. WXGI radio had been formed by two servicemen after their return from WWII and they petitioned the FCC for the exact call letters they were issued - WXGI - "Ex GI" which many never knew. The only problem with the station was it was at that time licensed for "Daylight Only" - don't know if they have those types of stations anymore or not. The only regularly scheduled Grand National night races that were broadcast at that time were from Nashville (Bristol didn't begin night racing until Summer 1978). So when Nashville rolled around, I'd sit in the '57 Chevy and listen to those two races on the junkyard AM radio I had installed, picking up the crackling signals of various far away stations bouncing off the night sky. Nashville was also in the Central Time Zone, so it was always a late finish. It's a wonder the neighbors didn't call the police about the suspicious activity of the boy sitting for hours in the car by the curb after dark!

MRN vs ESPN2 Announcers

You know, Jim.... for years I never had the tv volume on, especially during those awful Fred Rhienstein / Ken Squier World Sports Enterprises productions. I must admit, though, its been a good while since I've listened to the radio broadcast. I will say I could not bear to listen to Bruton's network... too over hyped and full of errors. The MRN crew has always done an admirable job. By the way, MRN lost it's longtime Charlotte broadcast station partner this year. One thing I'll say for the tv networks.. and I'll probably open myself up for flack, but I think most of the female broadcasters on the various race telecasts do a good job. Very different than all the "pretty face" sideline reporters in the NFL who don't know a football from their compact. But back to your original point, MRN has always done a good job. Frankly, I'm surprised they stiill have the Atlanta broadcast and not Bruton's PRN deal.

The Magic word " IF " this is how if is so important to racers getting into the chase

General

Johnny,

It must have taken a number of lawyer, lottery andaccountant types to figure this out... I am reminded, of course, of the famous Rudyard Kipling poem:

Rudyard Kipling
If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Gosh, PKL... sorry to hear of the phone woes..

I can't even use the "dumb" cell phone my wife supplied me a couple of years back. I keep it on the kitchen window sill and put it in the glove compartment when I drive somewhere. but I never turn it on and can never remember how to work it. Locked myself out of the voice mail, but I don't care. Still have to depend on my Windstream land line... works much better than my internet service. Hope they get you up and about quickly. Funny... I watched an "All in the Family" episode today from 1973... Archie had his new super fancy $300 watch for which he paid $25 stop working. Edith took it to have it repaired, but the jeweler told them it would cost $21 and the watch was worth $8.

Listen to the names of these racing pigs! Ok, I admit I'm bored, but it is racing from Wilson!

By the way, the "Goat Rodeo" starts around the 3 minute mark!

NASCAR Unites for 9/11 tribute at Richmond
Will observe moment of silence on Laps 9-11; industry-wide recognition planned
By Official Release
September 07, 2011 3:52 PM, EDT

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, NASCAR on Wednesday announced a special in-race tribute to take place on Saturday during the Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway. Fans attending the event, ABC-TV and MRN Radio broadcasters announcing the race, and the track announcer all will go quiet for a moment of silence from Laps 9 through 11 at the .75-mile oval.

The three-lap moment of silence, in which all fans attending the race also will wave American flags, is the culmination of many 9/11 tributes and patriotic activities being planned by NASCAR race tracks, teams, sponsors, licensees, drivers and fans in special recognition of the anniversary.

ABC's broadcast of the Richmond race also will feature a NASCAR Foundation public service television spot that encourages NASCAR fans to pay tribute by pledging to perform good deeds, support charitable causes and volunteer in honor of the 9/11 victims, survivors and those who served in response to the attacks. The NASCAR Unites-branded, 30-second PSA has been airing on ABC and ESPN race broadcasts, as well as on SPEED, since Aug. 27.

"NASCAR takes great pride in the patriotism that the sport showcases every race weekend, and the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is a special opportunity for NASCAR to unite and recognize those we lost and honor those who responded with courage," NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France said. "Bringing together the various 9/11 tributes with the NASCAR Unites platform collectively demonstrates the giving nature of NASCAR fans and those who work in our sport."
