Prayers Needed for Don Naman

Administrative

Don once introduced me to a judge at a Talladega "Grand Marshal" dinner who got me out of several fairly serious traffic citations that had been issued by an Alabama State Trooper. I was always indebted.

Poor Target, All They Got is Juan Pablo Montoya

General

My wife has accused me many times of not being PC. She is all the time telling me I can't say the things I do. JPM is definitely talented, but a mouthy loser. Just once I'd like to see him have the "that's raciing" answer instead of crying about how he was done wrong. Personally, I think Target has gotten less out of a major sponsorship in NASCAR than just about any sponsor. I used to say that about Lowe's in the pre-Jimmie Johnson days. Back in the "good ole days", I was always taught that I had to spend a minimum of $3 onmotorsports related advertising and marketing for every dollar I spent on race car sponsorship. That was a pretty good formula. Painting your name on the side of a car and spending millions of dollars is not amotorsports marketing program, it's more like an executive good ole boy perk. But, I digress. Never saw Elvis at K-mart, but do remember being invited over to the Big K parking lot by Jaws!

Poor Target, All They Got is Juan Pablo Montoya

General

My local 6:00 pm newscast just led with a story that an Anderson, SC couple has seen an image of Jesus on their Wal-Mart receipt. That got me to thinking... we all have heard over the years of Elvis being spotted in K-Mart, now Wal-Mart has got Jesus. Poor Target, all they got is Juan Pablo Montoya.

What I Miss About the Old Atlanta Track

General

I want to sincerely thank RR member, Robert Turner for sending me several Wrangler themed Atlanta photos he took when he was track photographer. When I got the one below, I was pleasantly surprised to see myself in it. The photo of the Osterlund/Earnhardt Pontiac is takenat the spring1981Atlanta weekend and is historically significant because it was the first race that Dale Inman worked as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt after leaving Petty Enterprises. You can see Inman pushing at the back of the car. At the driver's window is a very young Doug Richert and to the left of the car, not in his Wrangler pit gear, is former driver, Marv Acton. Standing erect beside Richert with cup in hand and Wrangler hat on head is me, about 50 lbs lighter and with no gray hair! Amazing how cordial the crew always were to we sponsor reps who were constantly in their way. Again, I really appreciate Robert Turner sending this.

What I Miss About the Old Atlanta Track

General

We used to make informal wagers about when the train would pass the Martinsville backstretch. Iused to have 8mm footage of Bill Dennis backing his #17 Monte Carlo into the turn 1-2 Martinsville wall. What stands out in that footage is the beautiful green grass and lovely azaleas.Same with the 20th Century Fox film crew that was there shooting Last American Hero movie footage.Thery actually had a cameraman lying in the grass between the azaleas filming that classic lap after lap, side by side battle between Bobby Allison in the Junior Johnson Coca-Cola Chevy and Richard's STP car. As you so often point out, those days are gone.

What I Miss About the Old Atlanta Track

General

If you remember the pre-Bruton, pre-new Atlanta configuration, you might remember behind the old turn 1-2 retaining wall area stood literally hundreds of very tall pine trees. You didn't see all these track billboards then. On Sunday race mornings, before the sun was up and anybody could see what we were doing, Bob Jannelle, Mel Parkhurst and I used to string blue and yellow "Wrangler" banners between those trees. When the sun came up, from the grandstand it looked like we had bought turn 1 and 2 and those banners looked great on tv and in still photos. Can't do that kind of stuff anymore.

Weyman Milam, early pioneer

General

I didn't read this item when originally posted and wasn't familiar with Mr. Milam. I always appreciate, though, reading of our sport's pioneers, especially the ones I didn't know. I'm glad Robert posted this. I'm kinda missing the "bashing" reference, but usually get around to at least glancing at all the posts. The last day or two I have had some incredibly enjoyable conversations with Jim Reep about old DiGard personnel and Wrangler Aviation cargo planes. I think maybe some noses have unneccessarily been bent out of shape. Let's try straightening them back out. We all love our stock car racing past, or we wouldn't be here.

Grandsons Simplify Favorite Driver Pick

General

I guess through the years we've all had different reasons to pick a favorite driver. Today , both of my grandsons happened to be at my home watching (between my naps) the New Hampshire race with me. Daughter, Gwyn's son, 6 year old Connor has always pulled for Jimmie Johnson because his dad owns a carpet installation business and his biggest client is Jimmie's sponsor, Lowe's. That makes perfect sense to me. Daughter, Stacey's son, 10 year old Tommy pulls for Denny Hamlin and I always figured it was because he was from my hometown Richmond, Virginia area.

During the race today, Connor asked Tommy why he pulled for Denny. This was Tommy's answer: "Denny is a good driver and his last name starts with the letters H - A - M. Why wouldn't I pull for a driver whose last name starts with my favorite food?" And now I know the rest of the story!

Bicycle Race

General

I used to drink a few cold beers at the Bombay Bicycle Club in Ann Arbor when I went to Michigan races back in the day. After a few cold ones the fat bottomed girls fit the song title, "The Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time." Oops, did I get off track? I suspect all fans would share the point of view you express, Jim. An excellent time to expand the seat width.
