1979 Daytona 500 - The Perfect Storm - Tonight!

Stock Car Racing History

By the way, if you never heard the late P.A. announcer, Ray Melton give the "Command," there's a clip very early in the show of Ray doing just that at Darlington very late in his career. It was worth watching just to hear Ray one more time intone the drivers to start engines.

1979 Daytona 500 - The Perfect Storm - Tonight!

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks for the heads up on this, Chase.

I am no fan of Fox Sports and usually detest everything they produce. HOWEVER, "Perfect Storm" was a masterful production to fit into an hour time slot. It was definitely the best piece of television I've EVER seen Fox do.

I particularly enjoyed seeing an old PR buddy - Alexis Leras, who I hadn't seen in 17-18 years. Alexis was the lady being interviewed in her kitchen. She was NASCAR News Bureau Director at the time of the 1979 race and I really enjoyed her behind the scenes looks at what was going on in the tower when the green was waved (with the yellow) on the wet track to accommodate CBS. I really enjoyed hearing the late Bill Gazaway give the order to my former Wrangler & 7-Eleven show car driver, Chip Warren to throw that green.

Alexis was a real pioneer for women in motorsports, being one of the first to be allowed in a NASCAR garage. Harry Melling later hired Alexis and moved her to Dawsonville, Georgia to protect a very media shy Bill Elliott and orchestrate the PR effort that led to his being named Most Popular Driver year after year. Bob Bahre later hired her to go up to New Hampshire and give some professional direction to that track's PR effort in the wake of several tragedies. The New Hampshire winters were not to her liking and Alexis retired back to her Daytona home. That was a loss for both auto racing and the role of women in auto racing.

If you missed "Perfect Storm" try to catch a rerun. You will not be disappointed.

Bopper's Big Break? Power to the People? $$$? Will He Still Get to Daytona?

General

You know how they say everybody in a small town is either related or knows each other. With this afternoon's news that a winning Powerball ticket was sold in Shallotte, NC, I'm wondering if Bobby Williamson is making any plans to start his own racing series?

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - It's official! One of the three winning tickets in the Powerball jackpot was purchased at the Scotchman on Whiteville Road in Shallotte, NC.

SHALLOTTE | With luck in the air and a buzz of excitement, some customers hoped the Shallotte Scotchman stores good fortune would continue for them on Thursday, as news spread that the store had sold one of three winning Powerball tickets.

Shallotte resident Edgar Jaramillo said he heard about the winning ticket from his boss.

I had to come out and see if it was true, he said, while purchasing a Mega Millions ticket.

North Carolinas $188 million winning Powerball ticket was sold Wednesday night at the Scotchman at 359 Whiteville Road.

This is the fourth winning Powerball ticket sold in North Carolina and the largest prize in state history. It was the third largest Powerball prize in U.S. history, according to a statement released Thursday by GPM Investments LCC, owner of Scotchman.

Jay,

Bits and pieces are coming back to me about the photo I'd love to see again with me, Bobby Allison & maybe Dale Inman in the Rockingham garage at a Fall race swapping sponsor jackets and caps during silly season.

I'm thinking the photo cutline in Grand National Scene read something to the effect....
"Dave Fulton, THEN with Wrangler...."

That would mean the photo might have been published in early 1984... I'm guessing, since I left Wrangler for 7-Eleven in early February, 1984 and went off the Wrangler racing program after December 1983. Could have been a 1983 season recap issue or even a 1984 preview.

These are all guesses. But, if you do ever stumble across it, I'd really like to see it again. Those were some very hard working, but very fun times.

Thanks,

Dave Fulton

Jay, thank you for looking. It is possible the photo I'm thinking of was taken at the Fall 1981 Rockingham race during silly season when we were shopping for a 1982 ride for Dale. The memory is getting worse and worse. I know it was taken in the Rockingham garage at the fall race and appeared in GN Scene.

It was very kind of you to look at the 1983 Rockingham coverage.

I think the old saying goes, "You can run, but you can't hide."

Thanks, Jay. This photo has Bud in it and the one filed with Getty Images doesn't. That makes it much more special to me. 99% of my racing photos and movies were on loan for a NASCAR 50th Anniversary film feature and lost in a fire at Car & Track Productions in 1998.

If you make it as far as the fall 1983 issue of Grand National Scene (I believe it was '83) covering Rockingham, there's a photo of me with Bobby Allison wearing my Wrangler jacket and Dale Inman (I think) that I used to have but lost. We're all exchanging team jackets during silly season. If you ever come across that one I'd sure like to see it again.
