4TH ROW OUTSIDE

Stock Car Racing History

4th fastest overall. If he hadn't had to leave early for yesterday's bread & circus, he probably would have been able to get into the Fast Nine (I think he was 10th). That would have allowed him to advance anywhere amongst those 9 during today's qualifying, and so the inside of the second row.

They just went to this qualifying routine this year and I don't really like it. Too many opportunities to hit the wall. Instead of taking a huge risk once, you have to do it on Saturday to get into the Fast Nine, then again Sunday to go for the pole. Thankfully there were no crashes the whole weekend.

Busch has a fast car and has demonstrated a lot of skill but will be lucky to finish in the top ten. Like a lot of other tracks, speed isn't the determining factor, strategy is. I'm sure that Andretti didn't give him the best crew chief, and racing in traffic is a whole nuther game than running flat out by yourself. If he doesn't crash, I'll put him down for a 7th place finish. And he's going to be totally wiped for the 600 so I predict a relief driver.

April 27, 1975: USAC's Trenton Twin Bill

Stock Car Racing History

" I'm curious as to how they may have secured the rights to use the name World Series. "

I think that in 1975, people weren't jerks like they are today. Clearly the event had nothing to do with the actual World Series (the Yankees weren't in it), so nobody was going to confuse this with the real thing. But as an intra-league invitation-only event, they had even less justification for the title than their baseball counterpart.

When open wheel had races outside the USA, they used the title Indycar World Series . There's the Chumpcar World Series and the World Series of Poker as well, so I don't think that Major League baseball is as self-absorbed as the Super Bowl guys.

MODEL CITY 500 1969

Stock Car Racing History

And a related question...why are there so few Barracudas in these races? The Dodge Dart had a strong presence in the 1966 and 1967 Trans-Am races but I can understand why they wouldn't fit in here. But I expected Chrysler to have some presence in the series. No Firebirds either. I thought Buck Baker drove one. It's easy to see why Chevy didn't need to be in Grand National when there were so many Camaros.

I also notice that you refer to this as Grand Touring. I thought it was Grand American

HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WINS BIG LAST NITE AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Current NASCAR

That's an impressive win but I'm still holding my breath. There have been a lot of sons of star drivers that opened big and faded away fairly rapidly. I'm guessing that Bill raised his boy right, and NASCAR's gonna need some new names soon. So I'm pulling for him but I'll wait until he gets to Cup and see how his first two years go.You have to be good to keep Kyle Busch behind you, even if you have a faster car.

The Next Generation Race Broadcasters

Current NASCAR

Cody -

I've thought about Ken Schrader as an announcer before. He's well liked and he knows a lot about every level of racing. I'd be surprised if he's never been offered a pre-race or booth job, but I suspect that he turned it down because he wouldn't be able to race as often.

I've lost track of him, but he's probably still racing at least once a week. All those production meetings cut down on travel time. Schrader would make a great replacement for Larry McReynolds. He knows about setups and construction and wouldn't be afraid to reel in the Waltrips when needed.

I used to like Mike Joy but not any more. There's no question that he knows how to call a race but he's gotten lazy. He's the ringmaster and he isn't doing his job. He needs to keep Waltrip in check. He needs to get McReynolds to stop repeating the same phrases again and again. He isn't staying on top of the action as well as he used to. He's just laying back, getting fat and collecting a paycheck. Fox needs to clean house. It's a shame they didn't do it when Bestwick was still available.

The Next Generation Race Broadcasters

Current NASCAR

I think I would have liked Kyle Petty's outspokeness in the booth but he's old school now. I never watched pre-race shows so I don't actually know anything about his on-air personality.Carl Edwards strikes me as having an artificial personality but he knows racing and seems well suited for an announcer job.ESPN used to do it with just Bob Jenkins and Larry Nuber. Neither were racers and they did fine. I don't think we need a lot of on-track experience. Dick Berggren and Chris Economaki knew their stuff too.Danica is well spoken and easy on the eyes. She knows enough to do the job. She's also got an independent streak and wouldn't tolerate a goofball in the booth or a producer who didn't know how to show racing. You'd rather have DW than her?The networks seem to favor having some kind of animated comedian in the booth although I don't really care for it. Benny played the the role perfectly. David Hobbs does an admirable job on the Formula 1 broadcasts. I can't think of a current driver who could fill that position.I'm encouraged by the news that NBC will use Jeff Burton. he should be good. I know nothing about Steve Letarte's personality, but I don't think we need a crew chief in the booth. I'd prefer he was used for short pre-filmed tech segments that could run during caution periods. None of the shows have ever done a good job explaining the nuts and bolts of the rules and hardware. My ideal broadcast team for right now? Dave Despain, Bob Jenkins and either Mark Martin or Jeff Gordon.

Lynda Petty past away

Stock Car Racing History

I don't know that much about Lynda but seeing as how she raised Kyle and kept Richard humble, she must have been good people. I wouldn't be surprised if the King lost some of his will to keep on going.

Penske won't give up

Current NASCAR

Penske Racing is considering an expansion into the Australia-based V8 Supercars series, and has targeted former V8 series star turned NASCAR racer Marcos Ambrose as a potential driver.

The guy is 77 years old and has truckloads of money. You'd think he would want to retire and enjoy life. The V8 Supercar series has a race at the Formula 1 track in texas and is very popular online. they have the potential to take out NASCAR. If you like road racing.
