Must have been a backup car. I was at the 80 D500 - was won by Buddy Baker. The King raced the Olds 442 in that race. Curious if this was a shake down of a Monte in case they dumped the 442.

Now this pic has a story. I am not sure but read that they tried to ring out a Monte Carlo and did not like the results. When Nascar shelved the Laguna GM teams brought out the Olds 442 but felt the Monte might work at Daytona because it did not have large rear opera windows like the Olds.Waltrip ran a Monte at the 1978 Daytona 500 but wrecked it when Petty blew a tire wiping out him and Pearson.
