A tale of two Joes
This happened back in the early 50's to my best recollection for I was young and cars were my object not time.It was in New Ellington SC at the track on outskirts of town, dad had pulled down to track and parked alongside of another car. The process of prepairing the cars to qualify were at hand, everthing went along as planned I suppose until the car parked next to us went out and only made one lap on qualifying. He came back in to the pits and parked and up came the hood,a bad sign. After a quick look there seemed to be something amiss under car because the scuffel was under there. The best I can remember and what Ican get out of a guy that worked for my father who was there was they had just built this motor in the car and the oil pump was going bad.Well next thing I know they had this car blocked up on one side so high it was about to roll over and they went to work on the oil pan .Off it came and now more trouble was found, the bearings were shot also.Somewhere in this circus I was watching from my perch on top of the truck my fathers crew and and this guys crew went to work on the motor, now mind you a crew isnt what they have today in Nascar, but only two of my dads and one of the other plus both drivers.Well they proceeded to pull the rod caps and main caps and replace these bearings while repairing the pump. The other cars were still time trialing as this was going on and Roz Howard just came in running late and parked next to us on other side. Now they unloaded and prepaired to qualify as the work continued on the other car.Now this bunch came over and began helping also and by the time qualifying was over the car was back on its wheels and running.Well the car next door went out and won the heat race with no problem and Roz Howard got the next one with dad close in behind in second. The trophy dash was held later with the four top qualifiers in it,they dont do this anymore for some reason.Feature time and everyone was out on the parade lap in all their glory ready to give it their all.It was a show as always with about six cars dicing for the lead. You remember the car that was rebuilt next door, well it came from the rear to the front somehow and was battling for the lead.Well the outcome put that ford coach out front while dad and Roz Howard battled to the end for second. That day is special to me because the guy that won that race has a son that is a good friend of mine. Yes Joe Riddle won the race that day in a car with number 1 on it, my dads number was X-1 so now you see the similarity, but one more thing is signifcant, both guys first names are "Joe".Both these cars and drivers went on to win a few more in their life on the track but also Joe jr and myself have memories we can share with others. Now thats ------------------memories
Johnny, what a great story and yes, you do need to write a book of short stories.I wanted to share this photograph once again just for Mr. Riddle and it shows just how important these gladiators of the sport can be. Joe riddle won the first event on this track and that is now documented for history. We are working hard to put his name in granite.
Joe, I expect your Dad also raced motorcycles at the Dan Bowles track located behind the old Babcox-Wilcox plant which is now Thermal Ceramics.Sorry it took so long to get all of this information together for you and other Motorsports fans to enjoy and remember.
