i read all these entries about some of our great drivers from ga--like rance phillips, lord he needs it for all he did in racing--or like harold fountain, another mountain of a driver just like joe riddle, these guys are recognized in print several places.i think im going to dig some truly athletes out of the wood work and see if i can get them some recognition..Tonite lets start with this guy,he is from hawkinsville ga and a true racer if you just look--he took what most thought to be just a good ole dependable chevy six cylinder engine and put it in a chevy coupe and ran with the flatheads all over ga in the early fiftys. But when the V8 motors come on the scene he took that same coupe and run all around them,I know because he ran where we were starting out and to catch that coupe was next to impossible, the quarter mile tracks seemed to be suited for the little coupe but then we started half mile tracks and would you believe it ,that little six found its way into a fifty five chevy and still in the hunt up front. Ican remember a guy back in the day called stonewall jackson that had a screaming six but it couldnt keep up. that six had a weird sound when it was idling, kinda like it was loping all the time and it had a funny setup on it for carburetors, they looked like they belonged on a XKE Jag,maybe they did but it would haul the mail. It had a hum to it on the track i have yet to hear from any other car except the vintage six he built to race in ga vintage group. that ole coupe back in the fiftys and sixtys was little,i mean it looked so delicate but it would take a beating. One nite he wrecked real bad at the short track in warner robins ga and he called home and had the john deere dealer there send his implement roll back up to pick his little lady up. thats how he thought of that car--but next weekend he was back with a vengeance because he cleaned house with it . he is retired now from working ----but not racing because on any weekend you will find him at the wheel of his yellow nova busting drivers chops on the track--now he is one of the older than dirt guys because he is over 73, i will say it that way to protect my life but he is as good hearted as anyone you can find at the track but devoted to the sport like no tomorrow . Mr. Woody Moore is a special kind of driver, talk to him and you will find outI will run on the outside of him anytime on dirt because he has the finess to get the job done without bumping .he needs to be recognized in the ga racing hall of fame along with others of the past For you Woody Moore I commend you for your many years of driving and to many more and the picture standing beside his 55 in his hands is the helmet he used in 1953,also i found the picture of woody in his famed black and red chevy coupe --------------------now thats memories
Absolutely. By the way, if you feel you know a driver, promoter, mechanic or individual who should be in the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, the first step is to nominate them. That's the job of the race fans, to nominate the heroes they feel should be honored. To learn how to nominate an individual for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and to learn more, click here for a nomination form.
Ya old Harold Foutain would be a good one for the G A Hall
I agree. As I said to several people over the weekend "All you've got to do is nominate him, and the process has begun."
This is what this site is about!...getting stuff like this started.
