I was there for the Permatex 300 that year, this was probably the scariest wreck I have seen since Don MacTavish in the 300 in 69. ( RIP Don, will be 40 years this Feb.22) They have film of this on this sight, I just about ( you fill it in) when I saw this fireball from this collision. Ithopught for sure there would be a fatality form this fire BUT Don Williams from Georgia driving the #68 Chevelle took a hit on the right side of the car did not make it out of the car when rescue crew got to him he was bleeding from the mouth, ears, nose, and eyes, they suspect he was struck with a driveshaft that came out of another car, BUT I think the combination of his wreck and seeing a fireball like that would scare the life out of someone. He was in a coma for 10 years and passed away in 89. The car itself was to NASCAR specs and just a matter of chance that he was hurt like he was. I Remember a local driver from Beltsville , Jack Bland was also invovled in a fire he had a transmission bearing failure which caused a fire and found a small hole in the firewall and flamed up inside the car, Jack was burned but came back to run as usual. And needless to say the Marion Cox Mercury was never ran again.

As I commented on the other picture of Joe's car, Delma Cowart was driving the car which hit Joe's in the rear. Joe received burns to his neck and face and almost had his beard burnt completely off., The worst burns were on his hands. He also suffered several bruises. Drivers did not wear fire retardant gloves at that time. Delma said that he almost ran over Joe as he bailed out of his car while they were both still moving at a substantial speed. Delma received a broken leg and several bruises also.
