Something I did not remember was that Earnhardt drove several races for Childress to finish the season.

Yeah Osterlunds team folded up shop and JD Stacy bought it out. Earnhardt didnt like racing for Stacy so he and Childress teamed up. Little did anybody know what a mega team was brewing when 1984 approached.
