Ah, do I remember those?

The Statler brothers had a song out years ago asking about all the thing's you could remember. "Do You Remember These?" as best I recall, was the title. Everytime I listened to that song I would think back over all the wonderful things of my youth I remembered, Quite nostaglic.

Last night, and this morning, I have been going through pictures here on the Racers Reunion site. What memories!!! How wonderful to see the pictures of the true race cars, the 50s, 60s and 70s. Didn't even need the decal to distinguish the Fords from the Chevrolets, and the Plymouths from the Dodges. Not a Toyota to be seen! Seeing faces from the past, faces I would once approach for autographs at the small tracks around South Carolina and North Carolina. Faces that went on to become recognizable to the entire racing world, and some that are recognizable only to the truest of race fans who can remember those wonderful days and nights at the short tracks and the dirt tracks. People who were in the stands and the infield to watch their favorites race long before racing purses paid over a $1,000.00 to win at 200 lapper on a half mile track.

The beautiful thing about my trip down this pictorial memory lane (Also the name of an awesome museum in Mooresville, NC) is that this coming week, April 14-17, those pictures will become, once again, REAL. The Historic Columbia Speedway,in Cayce,South Carolina, will host the Second Annual Love Chevrolet Columbia Speedway Racers Reunion. Many historic race cars and many drivers from the past will be there to once again excite the surrounding area with the thrill I knew as a kid growing up at that track. Wonderful times.

I am hoping that when I walk into that track Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, the place will be filled with true fans and activities to celebrate the reason for the Festival. I am hoping that Saturday will be so full of memories that I'll have to break out my Elvis album! The history of the sport is fading from memory of many as the glitzy movie-star like productions roll out on the big tracks each weekend. Every true race fan needs to be at The Historic Columbia Speedway next week. Speaking of movie-like productions, even a Hollywood script writer could not equal the true story of Tiny Lund's 1963 Daytona 500 victory. No television producer could equal the stories of Tim Flock, Lil's Bud Moore, Haskell Willingham and others. It's worth the trip alone to meet Peanut Turman. If you haven't met him yet, once you do, you'll never forget him.

Billy Biscoe, Johnny Mallonee, Bill Hollar, and so many more will be at that Festival. (I was going to list everyone but then the blog would be too long to be approved). Like the old commercial for the Ketsup, "anticipation"! Wow, am I ever happy we're down to only four days left until it starts. I'm counting the minutes!

Thanks to Racers Reunion, Love Chevrolet, The City of Cayce, and all the wonder sponsors like Holiday Inns & Suites, Napa, Harley Haven, Lizards Thicket,Haggarty Insurance, Piggie Park and so many more (see them all the in official program for the event).

See you next week at The Historic Columbia Speedway, 2001 Charleston Highway, Cayce, South Carolina. All you need is $10.00 for the ENTIRE FOUR DAYS, $5.00 for a program, and whatever you want to spend with the vendors. All the drivers will have their own Sharpies (furnished by Love Chevrolet).
