The series began in 1968 as the Grand Touring division featuring what we called pony cars. Mustang, Camaro, Cougar, Javelin, Dart and even sports cars like Porsche that first year. The named changed to the Grand American Challenge series for the 1970 season and lasted through 1972.

Ray Hendrick

Class of 2007

Biography

Ray Hendrick ranks as one of the greatest stock car drivers that ever raced consistently on the NASCAR Winston Cup/Grand National circuits.  His inclusion among NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers attests to that.  The bulk of his more than 700 wins came in modified and late model sportsman racing.  Born in the racing hotbed of Richmond, Virginia, Hendrick quickly became a legend, winning everywhere from Talladega, Charlotte, Pocono, Dover, Richmond and Martinsville to Trenton, Beltsville, South  Boston and Metrolina.  He raced against, and beat, some of the best drivers in every major stock car series.  His closest brush with a national championship came in 1966 when he finished second in the national modified points. Hendrick filled his schedule by taking every good opportunity that presented itself to race in various series, and therefore never undertook a full-time campaign in NASCAR’s top series. Yet in his 17 Winston Cup starts, he posted two top 5s and six top 10s.

There's tons of racing photos and racing history on Raymond D. "Ray" Hendrick. You noticed old race programs, old race magazines, old newspapers, and his old race uniforms, you'll see Ray Hendricks or Ray Hendrick names listed. Ray Hendrick put an extra (s) = Ray Hendricks used it as a gag joke to the news reporters. Google the name Ray Hendrick, or Ray Hendrick photos, or Ray Hendrick imagines, to get the ton of photos and information. NASCAR Hall of Fame don't know the name of Ray Hendrick?

Jeanne Barnes, 77, who drew dozens of portraits of NASCAR legends, died Wednesday morning following an extended illness, according to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee.

Barnes' work is displayed in the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame inside the Darlington Raceway Museum.

It's filled with dozens of her drawings and portraits of NASCAR legendary drivers, including Dale Earnhardt, Cale Yarborough and Kyle Petty.

Each picture is very detailed, depicting the true image of the drivers.

Those who knew her describe her as a kind and talented soul, who adored NASCAR racing.

They said she often worked at the Raceway during race time, helping out in the credentials office.

Friends said Barnes will be dearly missed.

Kistler Hardee Funeral Home in Darlington is handling the arrangements.

Hardee said her funeral will be early next week
