Johnny Steele of Carmichael, California - leader of lap 7 - ran 11 Grand National (Cup) races over a seven year span, including several stops at Riverside. The same year of this Pacific Coast event, Johnny came east and made the field at Bristol but was a DNQ at Rockingham. I saw Johnny the following year when he raced at Richmond. He also raced at Hickory, Beltsville and Hillsboro on that 1967 trip east. His Richmond outing in 1967 resulted in both a 30th place start and 30th place finish. Today's race fans will never get to see a Johnny Steele type driver with NASCAR's charter system and that's too bad. http://www.racing-reference.info/drivdet/steeljo01/1967/W

By the way, Johnny Steele, winner of 5 Pacific Coast Late Model events, is one of 22 candidates for 2016 induction into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame.
