Race lore had it that Richie knew every place where there was a gate or a weakness along the New York State Thruway and Massachusetts Turnpike that he could get on and off on without paying a toll. He raced at a lot of tracks not far from those two roads. Lore also had it that he had visited the tire manufacturer to learn how to read the codes on tires. He allegedly know how to tell what day a tire was made and what person or group of people made it. He was said to go to the tire truck when he got to a track and dig through all the tires until he found the ones he wanted. Whether true or not, it makes for great legend about a true legend.
