I do not remember the man's name, but he always insisted in being in the parade laps before the race. Dad (Sammy Bland) made me ride in the back of the car and used it to promote the newspaper

Ann, that's ole Clellan Jarrell's car, owner, with his brother of Jarrell's Truck Plaza north of Richmond, one of the big early I-95 truck stops. Clellan later dabbled in gasohol and I understand lost a ton of money. Note the VCJ license plate... don't know what the "V" is for. Clellan often had that car filled with a bevy of beauties he rode around, lol.

Yes...that is right. I could not remember his name...I just knew he was ALWAYS in the parade lap!!!
@dennis-garrett7 years ago Mr. V. Clellan Jarrell of Richmond, VA, passed away on February 28, 2007 at a Richmond hospital after a long battle with diabetes and asthma. He was born on November 9, 1928 to the late Sidney F. and Evie Hawks Jarrell in Surry County, NC. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Polly Worrell Jarrell; a daughter, Donna Jarrell Cherel and husband, Lucien (Chuck) Cherel and grandson Aaron of Vienna, VA; a son Timothy D. Jarrell and wife Carol, and grandsons Kyle and Kevin of Charlottesville, VA. He is also survived by a brother, Arlon G. Jarrell, Springfield, TN; and three sisters, Emogene Jarrell Fulk of Mt. Airy, NC; Bernelle Jarrell Rich and husband, W.M. Rich, Jr. of Roanoke, VA; Jo Jarrell Dresser and husband Carl of Winston-Salem, NC; and a sister-in-law, Frances Wright Jarrell of Ruther Glen, VA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers, Oran V. Jarrell and Porter V. Jarrell and a sister, Lola Jarrell Collins. Clellan was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force serving with a medical unit in Europe during the 1950’s and was in the Air Force Reserves for 10 years following. An enthusiastic promoter of the travel and tourism industries, he also served as Vice President of Sales at the former Jarrell Truck Plaza, Doswell, VA. More recently, Clellan served as Director of Public Relations for radio stations WXGI-Richmond and for WSVS-Crewe, VA. A lifetime member of Masonry, Clellan was an active member of Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, and a Shriner in Acca Temple, serving in the Provost Guard unit. Services will be held in Mr. Jarrell’s hometown of Mt. Airy, NC with arrangements by Moody Funeral Services. Visitation will be Saturday, March 3, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Moody’s. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Lester R. Bryant on Sunday, March 4, 2007 at 2:00 pm at Ivy Green Baptist Church in Mt. Airy, NC, followed by Masonic graveside burial. Dennis, back around that time, "Big John" Trimble was broadcasting his overnight live truckers' show (heard all over the country) from Jarrell's Truck Plaza over clear channel, 50,000-watt WRVA radio in Richmond. John later became program director/GM at WXGI.
