In 1960, I lived with Roy Tyner in Red Springs NC. together we raced the 59 olds that lee petty had won the Daytona 500 the year befor. that year when we raced at Darlington in the 500, we got involved with Bobby Johns coming off the no. two turn. Joe was making a pit stop which in the day was on the race track in front of the wall. joe either saw the cars coming or his crew cheif did and joe sped out of the way. as Paul Mcduffy,a nascar official and a mechanic tried to get over the wall, Bobby Johns car hit and flipped killing all three. I was sitting on the wall watching as it happened further down the pits. Roys car went back accross the track and into the grandstand wall and slid further down the track. it was a terrable day. Iwas at the world 600 when he won and was glad for him. we didn't do very well that day either due to a fire but the 600 was a terrible race due to the track itself. always thought a lot of Joe lee johnston.
