Columbus Speedway
In 1948, on the outskirts of Columbus, Ga, in the Midland community, the Columbus Speedway (twice) played host during NASCAR's inaugual season. The track was boarded by a chicken-wire fence, that offered little resistance to Red Byron's flat-tired '39 Ford coupe. Leading the July race in its final laps, Byron's misfortune hurled the Ford through the fence and into the crowed throng of spectators, with one fatal injury.
