Robinwood Speedway

The site of Humpy Wheeler's first racing promotional venture.......the legendary 1/4 mile, hi-banked, "Robinwood Speedway" off of Robinwood road in Gastonia, NC. The track's footprint no longer exists. This location was based on a former Robinwood driver's memory.

With near instant success as an outlaw speedway, Humpy ran afoul of NASCAR in 1961 and their efforts at the nereby Hickory Speedway. Humpy was ordered by NASCAR's Pat Purcell to discontinue using "Junior Grand National" as his featured division's name. Humpy reminded Purcell that NASCAR had borrowed the term from Britian's "Grand National Steeplechase" and they had no more legitimate rights to the name than he did. Purcell never bothered Humpy again.......but the rest is history!
