Can't remember the exact details, but there was a car in one of the races on the beach at daytona that had AC. Sems like itwas in the mid-fifties. It was not one of the front runners.

I do remember, quite well, that the Pettys were experimenting with air conditioning in the early sixties. Couldn't get it to work properly but one of the races they did try it was The Southern 500 but I don't remember it being 1962. More like maybe '59 or '60.

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

A little 1985 story from the Chicago Tribune on the subject of stock car racing and air conditioning:

A grammar lesson: CBS auto racing analyst Chris Economaki...
February 15, 1985

By Skip Myslenski & Linda Kay.

A grammar lesson: CBS auto racing analyst Chris Economaki is a self-appointed caretaker of the English language, a point he made at last year`s Daytona 500 at the expense of network sidekick Ken Squier and stock car racing`s voluptuous beauty queen, Linda Vaughan. The scene was set when the air conditioning in the announcer`s booth broke down and Squier, after 15 minutes of suffering, yelled into his microphone: ``Truck. Truck. Get me some help. The air conditioning is busted.``

The first response he heard came from Economaki, who was wandering through the pits. ``Ken,`` he intoned, ``your English is abysmal. Your air conditioner isn`t busted. It`s broken. Linda Vaughan is busted.``

The biggest problem Ken had was that he quit preparing. When Ken and Fred Rheinstein formed World Sports Enterprises, Ken was doing a lot of behinds the scenes selling and orchestrating of talent. He was lost in some production meetings before our Richmond races.
