DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 9, 2013) NASCAR has issued penalties to Michael Waltrip Racing following the sanctioning bodys review of Saturdays race at Richmond International Raceway .

MWR was found to have violated Section 12-4 (Actions detrimental to stock car racing). As a result, MWRs three teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (No. 15, 55, 56) have been penalized with the loss of 50 championship driver and 50 championship owner points, respectively.

These point penalties are assessed following the seasons 26th regular season race and not after the seeding for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Therefore, the point total for the No. 56 car driven by Martin Truex Jr. is reduced to 691, putting him in 17th position and eliminating him from the second Wild Card berth for the Chase field. Ryan Newman , driver of the No. 39 car, now moves up into the Chase as the second Wild Card participant.

NASCAR has also fined the MWR organization $300,000 and indefinitely suspended Ty Norris, MWR Executive Vice President/General Manager and spotter for the No. 55 car, for violating Section 12-4. The three crew chiefs Brian Pattie (No. 15), Scott Miller (No. 55) and Chad Johnston (No. 56) have all been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

Based upon our review of Saturday nights race at Richmond, it is our determination that the MWR organization attempted to manipulate the outcome of the race, said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. As the sports sanctioning body, it is our responsibility to ensure there is a fair and level playing field for all of our competitors and this action today reflects our commitment to that.

NASCAR should finish there job and replace the 15 with the 24 maybe then it will have a impact on this type of cheating. Jeff raced his butt off and if not for the 15 would have made it in.

James, you are exactly right. Under no circumstances should the 15 be allowed in the Chase in any position. If it were up to me, MWR would be banned from NASCAR for life. They did it to Curtis Turner and Tim Flock although they later reinstated them, WHEN THEY NEEDED THEM. As for needing MWR I can't see that ever being a need. Michael Waltrip couldn't walk a straight line on a balance beam.

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

HOORAY!!! Ty Norris of MWR is one of the biggest ---es I ever met in motorsports. Had to throw him and his little girlfriend out of my Richmond press box back in the 90s when he first took the RJR Winston PR job. He had the audacity to bring this bimbo into a WORKING press box and have her take the assigned seat of a daily newspaper filer. He was a sneak then and still a sneak.

While they're at it, they better check their fuel samples from all three MWR cars!!!

Now, suspend Clint Bowyer and Michael Waltrip for the remainder of the season.

Maybe if they keep working at it, NASCAR can eliminate enough drivers to get their GoGirl in the Chase!!!

Right you are Dave. To allow Bowyer in the Chase is a travesty. I've already scraped the Legendtorial I had written for tomorrow. I was advised by someone that my thoughts had already been appropriated by someone who snoops our site. So, after Patrick's show tonight, and after what Jeff had to say on that show, tomorrow should be interesting!

Now, we need for Brian France and Lesa Kennedy to call up Fox Sports and suggest that two Waltrips in the race telecast booth are two too many.

I'm speculating Clint's crew mistakenly added several bottles of that 5-Hour Energy goop to his fuel supply, causing such a surge of power that poor Clint lost traction coming off #4 resulting in him losing it. Or maybe Clint drank so much of that 5-Hour stuff that he had brain freeze in the closing laps. Just an inadvertent error, I'm sure.

2010 Clint Bowyer penalized in the first race of the chase for rules violation of rear body height (different team).

2012 Clint Bowyer involved in a controversial accident with Jeff Gordon during the penultimate race in the chase.

2013 Clint Bowyer spins in the last race of the regular season, allowing his teammate to make the chase.

This guy sure is good at generating negative publicity at the end of the year! Couple this with MWR's penalty at Daytona in their first race ever, and you've got a lot of bad vibes coming down on them. The Japanese have a different sense of honor and fair play, and they aren't going to like this one bit.

Michael Waltrip Racing has been doing well for them and Michael is very good at pulling in sponsors, so they'll probably stay with him. But they'll be pushing real hard for him to clean up his act. They may also start looking for another team for 2015. I believe that Clint Bowyer will be let go before Daytona and they will run the car similar to this year's Martin/Vickers/Waltrip setup.

I don't believe that Gordon should be in the chase instead of Bowyer, he just wasn't very good this year. Especially in comparison to Bowyer. But I do think that Bowyer should be dropped to 12th place in the chase. An intentional spin during a regular race is one thing; that kind of manipulation goes on all the time. But doing it to gain a spot for your teammate in the chase something else. That's not the kind of integrity we want in our athletes.

I agree 100 % back in the day you had real men driving real race cars, today if you have the money you can get a ride in a F1 carmade to look like a stock car, make them stock carsagain remove all the aero stuff, let the teams use there brains as far as shocks, springs and set up stuff, nothing left but cookie cutter cars, and as for drivers come on 16 year old kids getting rides because daddy has pockets full of cash, in most states they can't even drive at night. What ever happened to proving your self and working hard for a chance at CUP racing. NASCAR is on the wrong road for sure, just look at the grand stands thereempty andnot many folks I know are watching it on the tube anymore. Sad really
