For a few seconds or more ? ? One of Tim Leemings posts brought this back to mind and thought I would share a scary gut wrenching event that maybe you never thought of. Now it is best to be or have been a driver on a half mile or longer track to make this wake you up. I saw Kyle Busch have M&M moment over this same ordeal. Havent figured it out yet?? Ok here goes, I was running on the fast and I mean fast 5/8 mile dirt track in Telfair County Ga,just south of McRae Ga. I was up in the front two or three WHEN on the back stretch I set the old Chevy in a drifr to enter turn three ---- and then it happened, my safety belt came unbuckled and if ever a time my life to think quick this was it --- do you continue the drift and hope no one gives you a tap, or do you drift up out of harms way and rebuckle, this I did and would you have it I think it was three cars followed me up there and politely spun out.. This give me time to re-buckle and get back in line BUT my heart was not calm mind you.

I was told I was still white as a sheet when I got back in the pits, Now this was my Racers Reunion Moment from back in the day..

Johnny, the cars following you up high reminds me of a race at Richmond's Strawberry Hill half-mile dirt track in the 60s when Sonny Hutchins went high out of turn 2 driving Junie Donlavey's #90 Ford and knocked a hole through the backstretch fence. Three other modifieds followed Sonny right through that hole!

That is a great memory, Johnny, now that it's history. I know you wouldn't want to go through that again. I can't recall any moment behind the wheel on the track when I had a very scary experience. The accident that ended my career happened so quickly and then I was knocked out, and when I came to there were many people crowded around the car. Then it was off to the emergency room. Probably would have scared me to death if I had been able to know what was happening rather than trying to figure out why I was flying through an infield fence with no brakes and no steering. Thanks for sharing that experience.

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

Back in the early 50s I was the first one to roll over the guard rail after two drivers were killed the week before at Raleigh Speedway. It was in the first heat race. The fans were very quite until I crawled out of the car, then they cheered.
