Have you seen this picture before? Lexington's Lakeview Speedway 1948

I got this terrible quality image from a newspaper archive and could swear I've seen it in good quality photo form here on RR or somewhere on the internet. It is from Lakeview Speedway, Lexington, NC on May 2, 1948.

Have any of you seen this picture in good quality form and know where to find it? I may be imagining it, or thinking of a similar photo but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I have not seen that picture before but it is a great shot to add to our archives! Thank you.

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

Thanks, Tim. Even after doctoring it up as best I could, it's still terrible quality but I guess it's better than nothing and at least we know the date and location.

Eric, I thought you were B.S.ing me but you came through. I'd never heard of "The NASCAR History Book" but I got out my "NASCAR CHRONICLE" and there it was on page 30!

The caption says: " Ed Southers' battered #13 Ford rests on the outskirts of Lakeview Speedway in Lexington, N.C., after crashing through the wooden fence during the inaugural event at the 5/8 mile dirt track. Southers was unhurt in the accident. Red Byron won the 30-lap contest."

Scan of the book photo -

The way I found it in the newspaper archives -

Thanks, Eric!

I read that book every night before I go to bed

DID YOU KNOW: Lakeview was actually in Linwood, not Lexington?

A story in the May 27, 1948 edition of The Dispatch newspaper of Lexington, NC contains several lines referencing improvements made to the fence before the second race would run on June 6, 1948:

Don't know if he got into that reconstructed fence at the 2nd Lakewood race on June 6, 1948, but Fireball Roberts really tore up his modified that day in this photo from the Roberts family collection as posted at www.fireball-roberts.com :

That's awesome, Dave. Google newspaper archives is a goldmine. I can get carried away and lose track of time staying up half the night looking up early track info on there.

Here's an ad for the inaugural race -

I like to cut the photo out and tweak it a little -

Wow, nice clear shot of the car. Thanks, Jack. Does Marty Little have any more from Lakeview?

Yeah, I knew it wasn't actually in Lexington. I guess that was the way to name tracks back then, they used the name of the closest big town so people not from around there would know generally where it was. Who would know where Linwood was who didn't live in the area, ya'know?

I really wish Google hadn't given up their archive project. I'd love to have access to my two hometown Richmond papers. They used to do a wonderful job of covering weekly races with stories and photos in both morning and evening editions. However, I'm thankful for the Google newspaper archives that do exist.

RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH NEWSPAPER is now $1.25 Monday-Saturday. $2.00 Sunday.
Hardly nothing about Old Time Racing in Va. area?

Copies of old auto race photos cost around $50 - $100 a shot??

Been trying to get someone + RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH NEWSPAPER to published hardcover/softcover book on Virginia Auto Racing History in RICHMOND + VIRGINIA.

There is ton of old auto racing photos in the (old) RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH NEWSPAPER and (old) RICHMOND NEWS LEADER NEWSPAPER ARCHIVES.

The Main Libraries in Virginia has old scratch up micro-film copies of the (old) RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH NEWSPAPER and (old) RICHMOND NEWS LEADER NEWSPAPER.
They need to get new clearer micro-film copies of the (old) RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH NEWSPAPER and (old) RICHMOND NEWS LEADER NEWSPAPER.

Or make it available through the INTERNET!!

Thanks for any information or photos posted.
