NASCAR confiscates MWR windshields

Sporting News

TALLADEGA, Ala.NASCAR confiscated the windshields of three cars built by Michael Waltrip Racing on Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.

The windshields of MWRs No. 56 Toyota, driven by Martin Truex Jr., and the No. 00, driven by David Reutimann, along with the No. 47 Toyota built by MWR for JTG/Daugherty Racing and driven by Bobby Labonte, were deemed in violation of NASCAR rules because of unapproved modifications, specifically that they were too thin.

The infractions were discovered during opening-day inspection at Talladega.

NASCAR made the teams replace the windshields with approved parts.

NASCAR spokesperson Kerry Tharp said penalties are likely to be levied early next week.

Would someone please let me know what advantage the Waltrip brain thought it could gain by having windshields too thin? Would the weight difference be that much?

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

Does this mean that you be caught cheating if you can see better than another competitor?? Todays windshields are so thin to start with they crack on their own. I cant see the gain thats got Brians hair ruffled.

What about the slick tape that is being applied to the front and rear bumpers of the cars,is this illegal too?? My opinion but I think there is going to be a change in the specs across the board for next year.

The windshields are made out of lexan which is a bullet proof form of plastic that does not crack. Almost as hard as Mikey's head. What a D. A.

from what i found out....the thinner windshields were installed loosely bolted in for tech inspection.

then tightened up for racing - which then created a lil lip on the roofline which helped to deflect air off the spoiler

at speed..thus reducing drag on the car...guess a lil aero cheating ???

Michael Waltrip and Toyota came into Cup racing cheating. Seems they are getting bolder in attempts to find ways to cheat. I have to admit that was clever so I'm sure it wasn't one of the Waltrip brothers who thought of that. Some engineer is really good with imaginative ways to fool NASCAR.
