I believe the answer to your question may be found in the following news report excerpt from August 2011:

The U.S. Court of Appeals has set a tentative date of Nov. 8 for Jeremy Mayfields legal challenge to NASCARs ruling that he tested positive for methamphetamines in May 2009.

Jimmy I hope none of this is true. I'm not a person that see's some sort of conspiracy in most things but I still don't feel good about this whole deal with NASCAR and Mayfield. Something in my gut still wants to believe in Jeremy, and I will until the meth charges are proven.

UPDATE :

Meth, 40 guns and $100k in stolen property found in Jeremy Mayfield's home, sheriff says

Updated: Nov 02, 2011 2:37 PM EDT
CATAWBA, NC (WBTV) - Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was arrested Tuesday night on drug charges and detectives say they found methamphetamine, dozens of guns and nearly $100,000 in stolen goods from his home.

Mayfield was arrested in his home in the town of Catawba on possession of methamphetamine charges, according to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies had gone to Mayfield's home to execute a search warrant on a tip that there was stolen property in the house.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, detectives found 40 firearms, 1 1/2 grams of meth and a number of items that had been stolen from Lee Boy Inc. and Larry Grant, Inc., a trucking company in Lincolnton.

Investigators say they also recovered approximately 40 guns during the search as well. The guns ranged from antique weapons to high-powered rifles.

The guns are being run through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives gun tracing website to make sure none of them have been reported as stolen.

The stolen goods were located in a building and trailers on Mayfield's property and were returned to the owners.

Detectives say the items recovered for Lee Family Real Estate, LTD included heavy equipment parts, scrap metal, welders and welding accessories and other heavy equipment items.

The items that belonged to Larry Grant, Inc. included various truck parts, an engraving machine, truck mirrors, electric motor controllers and items that were stored in his warehouse on South Grove Street.

Detectives estimate the total value of the stolen goods at nearly $100,000.

During the search, deputies said they also found approximately 1.5 grams methamphetamine in the home. Investigators say the meth was divided between a half-dozen baggies.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending in the case.

Mayfield was scheduled for a court appearance Wednesday morning. His is out of jail on a $3,000 bond.

NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was suspended indefinitely after failing a random drug test in May 2009.

The result stems from a test at Richmond International Raceway.

Later Mayfield told WBTV the results of this test were not accurate. He claimed the results turned up positive because he took allergy medicine and Adderal for his Attention Deficit Disorder.

Mayfield and NASCAR were then involved in various lawsuits

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp issued an e-mail response Wednesday afternoon that said, "We will have to see how the facts play out. NASCAR's goal in its Substance Abuse program has always been to keep competitors safe and create treatment opportunities for those who need it."

Wonder how many folks remember when ESPN analyst Tim Brewer was crew chief for Tim Richmond on The Old Milwaukee / Raymond Beadle car in 1984? Brewer pleaded guilty to receiving stolen merchandise (garden tractors) and was suspended by NASCAR. He was replaced at Beadle's by Barry Dodson.

Looking at the photo spread of weapons seized at Mayfield's house, looks like he could have singlehandedly outfitted Toccoa's Old Man Militia!

Wally, for any in the Charlotte area, I think you nailed it yesterday when you mentioned Bill Diehl dropping the original defense. For those outside of Charlotte, Bill handles the "biggest" cases... big divorces, defenses of Ric Flair, etc.

After what was done to Tim Richmond I don't trust NASCAR. I'll wait till the trial is over before I accept what I've heard as facts. If he confesses I will accept that as well, but not what we've heard in the media. Still hope he is found innocent if in fact he is.

Jimmy, the property would have been returned to the owner and pictures, serial numbers, video, of the items held for court purposes. The court case could go on for years and this keeps the property from being tied up and the owner not being able to use it. It also saves storage space for the police agency.
