Courts are busy around the Charlotte area. We have multiple Jeremy Mayfield cases and Brian France divorce hearings.

Now comes word of Mike Harmon being arrested and charged with stealing Jennifer Jo Cobb's hauler. Seems JJC also had stuff stolen at Daytona in February if I remember correctly.

I remember reading about the Daytona incident. This is likely one of those deals where you can make a case for both sides.

Mike Harmon was just on the news empathically denying the allegations. He said that he has never stolen as much as a piece of bubble gum in his entire life. He said that he would love to know who had the key to the truck seen on the video driving out but it wasn't him.

Now JJC is on the news saying he shouldn't be allowed to race Friday night... that she doesn't feel safe with him on the track.

Rumors and inuendous ruin many folks. I can't believe Harmon would have done that but then I don't know the guy personally. Guess we have to wait until it all comes out.

JJC couldn't qualify because her truck wouldn't start so she didn't race last night.

From what I've read, both parties are guilty in this melodrama. The sad part is that it has to be played out on a national stage. In trying to defend their innocence each of them comes off looking worse. Whether business or marriage, breaking up is hard to do and the worst comes out in both sides.

Sure seems to be a lot of broken deal's, contracts, around JJC. Add to this latest lets not forget the Rick Russell deal that JJC made certain it got national media attention by getting out of the car at the start of the race. Russell claimed then that JJC had no money as contracted to supply engines, etc. That she also ignored a court order to return the hauler to Novak. I just don't get the feel that this was a theft and that Harmon took it. I'm looking forward to getting the full story.

And now the rest of the story...

Mike Harmon knew where the Jennifer Jo Cobb hauler was located and initially told police he would release it to them as long as they didn't return it to Cobb, according to a probable cause affidavit released by the Rowan County Sheriff's Office. Cobb's hauler, is part of an ongoing property dispute between Cobb and her former business partner David Novak. Novak, who was romantically involved with Cobb before they stopped working together in 2012, claims in a lawsuit filed in federal court that Cobb took the hauler from storage at Harmon's shop in January. His motion for an injunction against Cobb and for the return of the hauler was denied in February, and Cobb alleges in a document filed Thursday that Novak "hired others to proceed to misappropriate" property from her shop. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Novak on Saturday on an obstruction of justice charge and a charge of conspiring to commit felony larceny. According to the arrest warrant, Novak allegedly conspired with Harmon to steal the hauler and he acknowledged to a Rowan County detective that he knew where the hauler was but would not reveal its location. Novak, who lives in Illinois, has not turned himself in. Harmon, who worked for Novak as a team manager for the Jennifer Jo Cobb Racing team in 2010, and Harmon's girlfriend already had been arrested Wednesday on charges of felony larceny and breaking and entering. An additional charge against Harmon of obstruction of justice was added Saturday, and Harmon also was forced to give up his cell phone, which could indicate his whereabouts when the hauler was stolen at approximately 3 a.m. May 11. Harmon told reporters Thursday he has paperwork that shows Novak is the one who bought the hauler and equipment from Circle Bar Racing. When asked Thursday if he knew where the hauler was, Harmon told reporters he did not and that he was on his way back from Darlington at the time the hauler was taken. Harmon was asked point-blank by reporters if it was his cab that pulled the hauler out. He said: "No." He also was asked if he knew what happened to the hauler: "I definitely don't (know)," he said. That is different from what a Rowan County police detective believes and what he testified Harmon told him. According to a probable cause affidavit released Tuesday, a Rowan County detective testified that two days after the hauler was stolen, Harmon "indicated he knew where the car hauler was located but would not reveal that information unless I promised him it would not be returned to the victim," according to the affidavit. The detective said Harmon told him May 14 that he would deliver the hauler to the sheriff's department at 8 a.m. the next day. "Mr. Harmon did not return the car hauler & as he had promised," the detective said in the affidavit. "I called Mr. Harmon and he stated he had changed his mind and was prepared to be arrested if necessary." The detective said in the affidavit that Harmon's semi matches the video surveillance of the truck that towed Cobb's hauler away and that a car whose license plate matches that of the car of Harmon's girlfriend was seen at the Cobb shop at the time of the crim

The plot thickens, this morning on John Boy and Billy, Hermie Sadler said that Cobb was accusing Harmon of sabotaging the the borrowed truck and engine so she couldn't race this past week at Charlotte. Her statement was that someone sabatoged the engine in the garage, and guess who was in the garage stall beside her, Harmon. This is getting out of hand, fun to watch, but needs to end.

The subject of repo reminds me of my visit from Dallas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1984 to negotiate the sponsorship of the 1985 7-Eleven Cajun Nationals NHRA drag racing event.

The then promoter of Baton Rouge's State Capital Dragway was Norman "Moose" Pearah, a big fellow who favored low cut shirts and many "Mr. T." style gold chains. Moose took me sowewhere out in the bayou country that night to eat spicy, spicy, extra spicy crawfish, which of necessity had to be washed down with numerous pitchers of draft beer - don't believe it was Shaefer, though, Chase.

Earlier in the day, Moose had taken me by his latest Baton Rouge business venture, a Rent-to-Own auto lot. On the corner of the lot, Moose also had an auto insurance agency where he peddled the state required policies to his rent-to-own customers.

The beauty of his operation, explained Moose, was that most of his rent-to-own customers soon missed a payment and state law allowed him to simply call the parish sheriff who immediately located the vehicle and brought it back to Moose's lot, to be rented to be owned once again, perhaps to the same customer with a hefty upfront fee and a new auto insurance policy.

The relatively new rent-to-own automobile business in Louisiana was proving very lucrative to Moose in 1984 due to the ease of repossession by the local sheriff for the lot owner.

And... Chase, Tim, Richard, Robbie... any of you Petty Enterprises experts... I note that in 1985, when Kyle had left Petty Enterprises for Wood Brothers and Richard was at Mike Curb's... Dick Brooks is listed in the 1985 Daytona 500 in a Pearah / Bernstein (Petty Enterprises) Ford.

I'm guessing that the Pearah must be Moose Pearah who I was talking about above, teamed with drag racer Kenny Bernstein on the sponsorship.

This was a Maurice Petty fielded car. I remember Maurice also showing up at Atlanta in 1985 with a former Kyle T-bird painted white for Brooks, as well as at Rockingham. Morgan Shepherd drove it at the spring 1985 Darlington race, its fourth and final outing. Didn't finish any of those races and I recall Dick having a heck of a time trying to get it up to speed at Atlanta. Started 41st, finished 38th.

I believe it was RR's TMC/Chase who posted the above photo of the Pearah/Bernstein sponsored Maurice Petty fielded Dick Brooks T-Bird from 1985 above.
