Grand American race #10 of 1970 was held at Richmond Speedway, a 1/2 mile paved oval. Tiny Lund came into the event on an 8 win steak and the point lead over second place Wayne Andrews. Tiny continued to demonstrate his dominance by setting on the pole while Andrews exploded a flywheel in practice wiping out the engine. The explosion proof bell housing did its job well enough to save Waynes feet and legs but the car was almost cut in half causing him to miss the race. Tiny went on to his 9 ^th win in a row with Jim Paschal second the only other car on the lead lap.

Lund collected $1,200 of the $8,360 purse.

This was a Wednesday night race under the "original" Virginia State Fairgrounds lights. Tiny had to do some serious hustling. He had won a NASCAR Pacific Coast Grand National Late Model Stock car race over the weekend on Sunday in Sacramento, California. The Richmond Grand American race was the first major NASCAR event since a national television audience on ABC saw Richard Petty take his tremendous hit on the Darlington infield pit wall followed by the scary rollover.

By the way, Tiny Lund's May 10, 1970 NASCAR Pacific Coast Grand National win on Sacramento's 1-mile dirt California State Fairgrounds track came in a car owned by BILL CLINTON!

Nah... not that one... this Bill Clinton was from Los Angeles!

Richard Childress was an also ran in GA and Cup !

Including Tiny's win in Sacramento when he made a quick out west for a NASCAR Pacific Coast late model division (later WInston West) race, his NASCAR-race winning streak grew to 10 at Richmond.

A few photos I found today that seem to be from Tiny's victory lane celebration at Richmond in 1970.

Those were Richmond track co-promoters Kenneth Campbell (with microphone) and Paul Sawyer with Tiny.

@dave-fulton Do you know who is leaning against car with Tiny in the first photo that looks to a pre-race shot?

Chase, I don't recognize any others in the photos besides Paul and Kenny.

Appears that co-promoters Campbell & Sawyer paid Stan Starr, Jr. to put local Richmond favorite Ray Hendrick in Starr's #0 Camaro which Hendrick drove to a 5th place finish.

The car that exploded the flywheel at Richmond was the first Cougar Reid Shaw bought from Bud Moore. As a result of this explosion the car had 1970 sheet medal hung on it, except for the roof which was not changed. The bell housing that saved dad's feet and legs was in the car when Reid got it. I don't know if Bud made it or bought it aftermarket but it had what looked like a urethane coating on it. Dad remembers that the coating made it hard to get the engine bolts in and out.
