BRYAR 100

Bryar Motorsports Park

Loudon, New Hampshire

Sunday, July 19, 1970

Grand American race #21 of 1970 was held at Bryar Motorsports Park on the 5/8 mile paved triangle part of the racing complex. It was the third of a 5 event STP Northern Tour. Loudon is north of Concord about a 175 mile trip from Milton Vermont. Starting line ups were determined by qualifying heats. 5,500 spectators braved threatening weather but were able to see the race go the full 100 mile distance.

Tiny Lund started second but led the first lap with fourth place starter Jim Paschal leading lap two. Lund would lead lap 3 before Paschal would settle into the front spot thru lap 62. Pole sitter Buck Baker then led one lap with Max Berrier who started 20th moving into first thru lap 81. Lund went back out front on lap 82 and appeared to be headed to another win when he began to slow down and was pasted by Baker with only 4 laps remaining. Lund limped along the closing laps and would end up 4 th while Baker notched his second win of the STP Northern Tour. Max Berrier was a close 2 nd the only other car one the lead lap with Wayne Andrews 3 rd 2 laps back.

Baker earned $1,300 of the $9,205 purse. Of note on the purses for the Tour events was how the funds were distributed. The payout did not drop off as fast as you went down the order. No finisher got less than $200.

Twenty six cars took the green and 13 were running at the finish. There were 3 cautions for 17 laps.

Lund regained the Grand American point lead with his 4 th place finish as Ken Rush fell out just past half way and finished 17 th .

Personal note: The #1 on the Shaw Racing Enterprises 68 Cougar was taped over to make it #5 and driven 5 laps by Warren Prouts crew chief Darrell Bryant. Basically a start and park for the money. Just goes to show that you cant always trust the reason given for not finishing.

We talked a little about this race as well as a 1970 SCCA TransAm race won by a Bud Moore Mustang at the same site on the road course at the link below a few years back:

Thanks Dave, I remember your post and found something when I reviewed it. Your race result reported Tiny Lund as having transmission trouble. The NASCAR Newsletter I found the result in listed Tiny as running at the finish but if the transmission went out he may have run only one lap after Baker took the lead.

It's always interesting to find the little things that turn up in old race reports, isn't it?
