ONE FOR RICHARD CHILDRESS

It seems Richard Childress is helping out Morgan Shepard with his ride for Jesus for the rest of the year in Nation Wide-- now thats a different swing of events or do you see it otherwise

Richard Childress has helped many, many drivers during his years in NASCAR racing. I would certainly support Morgan's cause because I believe we need more causes like this..........especially in today's environment, but to comment on Richard's support................he has been a true goodwill ambassador of racing in general, many good causes, and many drivers who needed some support along the way. I think it is really admirable when one of the successful people in the sport not only supports good causes but makes major & meaningful contributions to those less fortunate. I commend him for this.

I think its good im a big fan of Morgan Shepard a real racer he is the only resion i keep up with the Nationwide raceing

Morgan Sheppard is just, generally, an awesome guy to know. But let me tell you my Richard Childress story.Back when he was running the CRC Chevy, we somehow ended up parked in the same parking lot somewhere. We were in my parents motor home and although I can't remember the track or the circumstances, I do remember we were all standing around talking. He was so affable and easy to talk with. He wasn't a "big star" in the overall scheme of NASCAR at the time, but to all of us, he was a Grand National driver and, as such, he was a star. Sometime during that day, he went into the back of his truck (the car was towed on an open trailer I remember), which was one of those "box" trucks used at the time, and brought out a CRC hat for everyone of us. We all wore those hats to several races. I was moving some of my racing things around last year and actually came across that hat. When I have time I'll see if I still have it or gave it away and when I was doing that "cleaning" I discovered I had well in excess of 100 caps of one kind or another. I have always thought of Richard Childress as a great guy and a wonderful ambassor for the sport of stock car racing. Happy to see him doing this for Morgan.Tim

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

That is the Richard Childress I know and admire. He is a hard man to get in touch with at times but he has not forgot where he came from as many others have and will help in most circumstances. He has been in Morgans shoes many times and now he is willing to help his friend out. To me that is nothing but first class. He also has helped many causes with out getting due credit and ask for none in return. I am proud to call him a friend of some 40 years and a supporter of the Old Timers Racing Club and many of it's members. He has always been just a phone call away. For that I am thankfull.

Wow, Mike!!! I didn't even know that about old R.C. But it doesn't surprise me. Even when I encountered him in the pits at Atlanta one year, after he had already won 3 championships with Dale, he was as affable as he was that day he gave us all the CRC caps. He has suffered much when he lost Dale so anything he gets in the line of good is ok in my book.Tim

I'm not surprised to hear about Richard helping Morgan, he's just that kind of a guy. In 1971 I was running Gran. Am. and pulled into the pitts at Columbus S C and parked next to Richard. He walked over to my truck and said," you have a universal joint going bad on your truck." Well ,Richard knew I was no mechanic and I was by myself with no help. He said, go to town and get one and I'll change it out for you." I did and he did. He slid under there, took the drive shaft out, changed it out and put it back in all for nothing more than a "thank you." Like I said, he's a good man. Years later when I was out of work I called Richard from Jackson.Ms. He never hesitated, but just said," come on up here, I'll put you to work." I did't have the money to go, so I moved to Ga. where I could stay in my sons basement and work for a near by show car co. My first job was driving Morgan Shepards ' Wood Bro. car. I enjoyed getting to know Morgan. I was real pleased to hear that he had given his life to Christ. Morgan was a real rounder in his day, but then a lot of us went down that road ,did'nt we? I'm glad to learn that R C is helping him.

It seems the more we talk about a person like Richard the more good we hear of him. I crossed paths with Richard way back when we were having way to much fun racing, that was back in the late 60's. Anyway thats how things were done back then, it was really a brotherhood of guys loving the same thing,we helped in areas we were good at and received help where we were not so good at it. As Bob found out at Columbia Richard has a heart of gold. Richard Childress along with Richard Petty and others that were true blood racers would stop and help you along the road or track or almost wherever you were. Bob only had to make a phone call to R.C. to recieve help,try that nowadays. Only a very chosen few would even raise an eyebrow to return the look. My take on yesterday, the days I loved and miss so much, its also why I strive here on R/R to try and continue the old time spirit and feeling to our new and upcoming guys and gals.
