ONE FOR RICHARD CHILDRESS

Stock Car Racing History

I'm not surprised to hear about Richard helping Morgan, he's just that kind of a guy. In 1971 I was running Gran. Am. and pulled into the pitts at Columbus S C and parked next to Richard. He walked over to my truck and said," you have a universal joint going bad on your truck." Well ,Richard knew I was no mechanic and I was by myself with no help. He said, go to town and get one and I'll change it out for you." I did and he did. He slid under there, took the drive shaft out, changed it out and put it back in all for nothing more than a "thank you." Like I said, he's a good man. Years later when I was out of work I called Richard from Jackson.Ms. He never hesitated, but just said," come on up here, I'll put you to work." I did't have the money to go, so I moved to Ga. where I could stay in my sons basement and work for a near by show car co. My first job was driving Morgan Shepards ' Wood Bro. car. I enjoyed getting to know Morgan. I was real pleased to hear that he had given his life to Christ. Morgan was a real rounder in his day, but then a lot of us went down that road ,did'nt we? I'm glad to learn that R C is helping him.

Found during a search for Tim Richmond pics.

General

Tim Richmond was one of the most talented drivers to ever strap into a race car. He was not however, one of the" good old boys", and was not the first to be shafted by NASCAR. He probably won't be the last. I could tell you some stories I've heard that would curl your hair, but they don't need to be aired here. They say you can"t fight city hall. There have been cases of someone beating city hall, but I don't know of anyone who ever fought NASCAR and won. On the other hand, NASCAR did't get where it is today by mistreating its racers.NASCAR was formed because of fly by night promotors who would leave with the gate money and never pay a purse. I've had that happen to me. But NASCAR would take of its people. Case in point; My first year racing Grand Am, we were invited by ASCA to inter their race a few days before our Paul Revere race at Daytona. About a dozen of us did. We were told we would not have to conform to there rules, but that was not quite true. During the race serveral of us was disqualified for one thing or another. I was dq'ed for jump starting my car in the pitts. The next day a NASCAR rep came into the garage and asked me were I had finished in the race. I said"',I think 12th overall, I'm not sure where in class. " He looked at the pay sheet and wrote me a check for that amount. You don't forget things like that. The playing field may not be level but NASCAR has been instrumental in a lot of good old boys getting rich.

Jr SUCKS!

General

Which rerevelation are we talking about ? I said a lot of stuff in that discouse, none of which was written in stone. I was just discussing ,and what do I know about the Jr. problem? It's pretty complicated. Back when I raced the driver was the greatest part of the equasion. Now you've got to have the whole package to get the job done. Driver, car, crew chief, pit crew, and a little luck and you might win a race. This one thing I know; it was a lot more fun when I was doing it even through most of the time I was broke.

Jr SUCKS!

General

Jr. may have the desire, but I don't think he has the fire. He had the misfortune to get thrown into the ring before he had a chance to learn the ropes. Look at Kyle Petty and Davey Allison. Richard rented Daytona for a couple of weeks and put Kyle in a top cup car and he won the ARCA race and thought he was a driver. He never did really become one. When Davey wanted to race, Bobby gave him an old Nova that was a piece of junk, and Davey and a buddy, was his name Bingo Long? Anyway, they took that ole clunker to places like B'ham, Mobile, P'cola, and Jackson,Ms.( the first track Bobby and Davey raced together on), and Davey learned to race. He would have rewritten the recordbook had he lived. What does Jr. do on days when NASCAR is not racing? Hang with his buddys and drink beer? Tony Stewart,Kasey Kane,Kyle Busch and others are racing somewhere on their off days. If Jr. does'nt have the fire,I don't know how to get it. You don't necessarily inherit it (look at Kinser father and son), you can't buy it and NASCAR can't legislate it, as much as they try. Mabey Jr. should get him a short track car and start over.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame

General

I agree with everthing that's been said. As for both Frances going in and the possibily of DW going in,that reminds me of driving my son home from a little leage game. He said," the coach played his son the whole game and I'm ten times the catcher that he is". I just said," welcome to the real world son".
