Roy Trantham
Stock Car Racing History
Back in my younger days I worked for Ray Nichels and Paul Goldsmith at their "Safety Center". They had a contract with Goodyear to purchase and re-sell the Goodyear "obsolescence" at local short tracks. I was fortunate enough to get to get to go to New Ashville Speedway and Hickory Speedway to sell those old tires. Usually they didn't sell good so I got to see some of the best racing ever at those tracks.
I saw Bosco Lowe, Jack Ingram, Roy Tranthem, Ned Setzer, the Houstons, the Killians Clarence Ogle and too many more to name go at it door-to-door and often bumper-to-bumper action that filled the stands. Trantham was one of my favorites then cause he was a Ford man and there wasn't many of that make winning back then. Roy not only won, he litterally thumped" the best of the best for a couple of seasons till Pete Keller and other "officials" made life miserable for that Ford.
Roy Trantham lost his last race Monday evening. He fought cancer just like he raced. Till the very end.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Roy on Friday, March 21st at Noon at the Palm City Presbyterian Church in Palm City, FL. Memorials may be made to Lukemia & Lymphoma Society or to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in memory of Roy and his passion for his pets. Notes of sympathy can be sent to his wife at: Lucia Trantham, P. O. Box 1293, Palm City, FL 34991.
