Virginia driver information

Stock Car Racing History

I have been doing some research on Richmond Fairgrounds races and found a name I don’t recognize. The attached race is a Sportsman-Modified from 1952 won by Giff Woods. I have seen another article where it is spelled Griff Woods. Anyone familiar with this driver?

The forgotten Norfolk Speedway

Stock Car Racing History

I found a Princess Anne program cover online and at the top it said Kempsville Rd. near Waterworks Rd. in Norfolk Va.

Looking at a current map puts it near the Princess Anne Park. Hope this helps.

David,

I found an article for that 200 lap race. It was on Sunday May 1, 1960 at Hickory. That was the weekend of double wins. The article said he finished almost a lap ahead of Junior Johnson.

Matthews Speedway - Easton MD

Stock Car Racing History

Eric,

I know there was an old horse track on Matthewson Rd called Barnwell Race Track about 3 miles east of Easton. This was from ads I saw in old Denton newspapers from 1946 to 1949. I do not remember any auto racing there, but I am checking into it.

And don't forget the National Boh 200 at Beltsville, one of the trackshighest paying LMS events. The first was Sept. 3,1971 with Harry Gant winning over Eddie Royster and Reds Kagle.
