Here is the front page story in Keokuks Daily Gate City. http://www.dailygate.com/article_b18791cf-7611-5d76-ac29-dafd3e478015.html
Ernie Derr, 12 time IMCA Stock Car Champion, passed away on January 8th in Keokuk Ia. He was 92 years old.
When you say a driver is probably the best stock car driver in town it doesn't mean much unless your from Keokuk Ia. Some of the drivers he battled for IMCA championships with include his brother in law 2 time USAC and 3 time IMCA Champion Don White, 2 time IMCA Champion and winner of 14 NASCAR cup series races in 103 starts Dick Hutcherson, 2 time ARCA and USAC Champion Ramo Stott, 3 time ARCA Champion Ron Hutcherson, all from Keokuk. When you can your the best driver in Keokuk you have said something.
Ernie started running STP sponsorship in the early 60s. His red and white Dodges with the big STP stickers and crew in the STP pajamas where always the car to beat when they pulled into a race track. I guess it is only fitting the he and Andy Granatelli should both pass away within 2 weeks of each other.
Ernie is the KING of IMCA stock car racing.
Now when I hear thunder rolling through the heavens I will smile because I will picture Ernie Derr in that big hemi battling Dick Hutcherson in his 427 ford on that big half mile in the sky.
Rest In Peace Ernie, and thanks for the memories.
Ernies obituary will be at the following link http://www.dejongsfuneralhome.com/obituary/121655/Ernest-Derr/
Three from my home town of Keokuk Ia. Ernie Derr, Don White, and Dick Hutcherson. And that's not counting ARCA Champs Ramo Stott and Ron Hutcherson.
Dick Hutcherson had 14 wins in 103 races over a three year period. He should be on this list.
I thought of your dad a lot this weekend while watching the 24. He and your uncle Ron came back to Keokuk for A Racers Reunion and we were sitting in the Sportsmans having a cool drink when He started talking about racing the 24. When that audi hit that slow car in the middle of the night it reminded me of that conversation. He said the two things that bothered him were racing in the rain and passing those slow cars, with the little tail lights, at night when there was about 100 mph difference in speed. I saw your dad race at Donnelson and Des Moines in IMCA. He brought his 67 Fairlane up for the race in Des Moines. Ron was racing a 49 ford with a 427 in it at Keokuk and Memphis. Dick came to Memphis with with Ron to shake down the Fairlane. He ran some laps between the heats and then before the feature he and Ron both went out at the same time. Ron's 49 Ford was painted gold and he ran under the number 29. The fans loved it.
