September 10 - This day in Petty history

Stock Car Racing History

Richard Petty won three times on September 10. Two of them were 1965 at Hickory and 1967 at Richmond. But the third one was the most spectacular of the three - the 1972 Capital City 500 at Richmond.

The following was originally posted by me here:

1972 - Richard wins the Capital City 500 at Richmond Fairgrounds Speedway to earn his 146th career win. He had to do it the hard way by waging a tough battle with Bobby Allison all day. And as Petty was leading, Buddy Baker got into the back of the 43. The King's STP Plymouth rode the guardrail for a while, popped off, never lost the lead, and went on to win the race.

TV Shows I miss

General

I've got a book that was published based on that series. "Written" by Brock Yates, its essentially a recap of the interviews from the episodes. The funny thing is I think its titled Great Drivers Vol. 1. The series didn't last a terribly long time, so I guess they didn't have enough content to publish additional books.

What's That Mean?

Trivia

Keep talking up Dover folks! I'm making my first trip there at the end of the month with a COLD PASS to boot! I'm putting out feelers everywhere I can in an attempt to meet The King, AJ, Marcos, Dale Inman, Robbie Loomis, the janitor, the candlestick maker, the Three Stooges, or whomever. I'm just ready to have a ball there - self-cleaning, Scrubbing Bubbles, steel wool, or whatever it takes.

Put Up or Shut Up at Rockingham on Tax Day

General

I agree ... to a point. Truthfully - in today's NASCAR - the trucks frankly offer the best racing IMO. I hate the concept of trucks' racing, but those guys are probably closer to the door bangin', old school racing I enjoy. But again truthfully - what is the average attendance of a truck race? Not good I don't think. So we'll have to be careful and put The Rock's attendance in the right context. To Tim's point, one of Nashville's sins was setting the price point of tickets for its races too high IMO. They eventually came down a bit but not before it was too late. I know the diff between Cup and non-Cup, but Nashville tried to tell me I didn't. Hopefully Andy won't make the same mistake, and hopefully NASCAR will recognize that reality in what it demands from him for sanction fees and purse minimums.

1992 Hooters 500

http://www.nascar.com/news/110831/atlanta-1992-documentary/index.html

If this show is as well done as the Richard Petty 200th win episode, this will be great.

I can't claim I've been to that many historical wins. I have seen drivers win their first race - such as Davey, Gordon, Rusty, Sterling, and Jeff Burton. But they weren't legendary races.

But I WAS at the 92 Hooters 500 - and still retain some great memories of that day.

Richard Petty Sept and Oct wins

Stock Car Racing History

OK Petty fans. Many of you helped immensely by providing memories, photos, etc. of races Richard Petty won during the month of August in his career. Now the calendar is about to turn to Sept. Before long, it'll be October.

I've already started typing blog entries for his wins in these months - but would love to include more info. Take a look at this list & see if you attended any of these races. If so, comment here or hit me with a message - I'll accept your friend request :-) I've really enjoyed reading the stories of others when they got to see the 43 roll to victory.

Tim Richmond Won Southern 500 25 Years Ago Today

General

Wasn't it just about dark when the checkered flag fell? Can't remember why - might have been a delayed start for rain - but I remember Tim staying hammer down to get the win. I think one of his Pocono wins in 1986 was in fog/near darkness as well.

Like Tim Leeming said - its remarkable to me its been a quarter-century since that magical season.

Getting Waltrips to Their Old Kentucky Home

General

I went this year because (1) it was the first one and (2) it was free. Maybe I should have switched the order. While we didn't have near the struggles with parking/traffic as others did, I'm not that inclined to return. This despite the fact the track may well be the closest to my house now. But I'd prefer to drive that extra 30 to 60 minutes to the east or south to hit Bristol or Talladega.

Happy Birthday Wendell Scott

Happy birthday to Wendell. And he was a Schaefer man. Scha-loot! (Thanks to RR's Brian Hauck for providing me this picture.)
