Did you know that the term "Self Cleaning" refers tomore than an oven?

What race track is said to be "Self Cleaning" and who is credited with giving it that description?

Dover is the place, I'm sure of that. However, I have to go with D.W. as coming up with that. He's come up with everthing else from co-opetition to vortex to gophers to being the poster child for the biggest mouth engaged by the smallest brain.

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

Keep talking up Dover folks! I'm making my first trip there at the end of the month with a COLD PASS to boot! I'm putting out feelers everywhere I can in an attempt to meet The King, AJ, Marcos, Dale Inman, Robbie Loomis, the janitor, the candlestick maker, the Three Stooges, or whomever. I'm just ready to have a ball there - self-cleaning, Scrubbing Bubbles, steel wool, or whatever it takes.

The track I'm looking for is indeed Dover the Monster Mile and PLK is right about the person who said it, he goes way back, all the way to the beginnings of Nascar.

The person credited with the term "Self Cleaning" was the man that built the Monster Mile Mr. Melvin Joseph.

Mel Joseph was in the asphalt paving business, but he never could get his own asphalt to hold up at Dover. That's why it went to concrete. Paul Sawyer at Richmond used to tease Joseph unmercifully and tell him that the asphalt onSawyer's half-mile lasted from 1968-1988, but Joseph's asphalt couldn't make it through two races!

Rockingham, built right smack dab in the middle of the sandhills but Darlington, not far from The Rock would have the same problem, don't recall it being as obvious as Rockingham. I don't know about Columbia other than it can get hotter than a griddle.
