Where did she go

General

Seems like I remember Moly Black Gold having some skanks ... I mean attractive young female sponsor representatives ... in that year or two when they sponsored Jimmy Spencer in Travis Carter's car.

Then there were also the Skoal Bandit girls and those sleazy Hooters girls around the Kulwicki deal that NASCAR wouldn't let in the track for a long time. I think some of the worst I ever saw were those Tuflon girls around Bobby Allison at Daytona for that fake product that never paid for their car sponsorship.

Bill Broderick was a race queen??? Man, talking about being out of touch. :-)

I haven't known a race queens name since the days of Bill Broderick and the Union 76 racestoppers..

30 Years Ago - Earnhardt & Childress - $10,000 a Race!

General

Great memories and stories Dave. At least in retrospect. I'm sure at the time a lot of folks were pretty tense. As a Petty fan, I really didn't get Inman's Daytona tears. I think I remember thinking it was just stress relief. Snookered Bobby Allison's team for the win, yet another D500 win, fewer & fewer wins for the King, the bad Pocono injury for Richard in 1980, the conversion to shorter wheelbase cars, the first full season for Kyle, etc. Beyond that, I didn't have any idea what was going on behind the scenes - and really to this day don't understand. I was shocked to hear him leave AND then to go with Osterland.

Looking back, it is interesting how Inman spent from 1959-1981 with Richard. Then from 1981-1985, he cc'd for Earnhardt, Tim Richmond, Joe Ruttman, Terry Labonte, & I think Mark Martin. All great drivers - yet a short time w/each of them.

And Jim Stacy - what a disaster that cat was. And he burned many in the sport not just one round but twice!

I'll second the nomination. All in favor? (raucous applause) Any opposed? (crickets chirping)

Any attorneys here who can draft the proclamation?

Should Sponsors Own Race Teams?

General

Intriguing question and business decision to be certain. From a sponsor's perspective, they likely have to rationalize it just as with any other business decision. What are revenues, costs, impact on market strategies & core competencies, etc. If a company like Red Bull gets into the sport but then bails later, they simply do lay-off, shut down, and recover costs where they can. Right or wrong, don't businesses do this all the time with plants, production facilities, sales channels, etc.?

But if you are the sanctioning body, then yes - I think you ARE more concerned. And yes - they have painted themselves into a corner. With the way costs to race have exploded the last 20 years, a corporate presence is almost required to participate. We all know the days of a reasonably competitive independent are all but gone.

Humpy Wheeler has speculated that MEDIA companies may one day own the teams. Perhaps a Rupert Murdoch owned FOX network would acquire the teams, contract the drivers and crews, sell the advertising/sponsorships, and air all the races. Without trying to draw too close an analogy, isn't this what Vince McMahon did with his WWE wrasslin' ?

The fans and the sport has changed. Does it really matter?

General

As a life-long Petty fan (and who jumped aboard as a kid AFTER the Ford year), I guess I've just accepted the 1 year switch as no big deal (though I'm sure it mattered to many). So I'm OK with this look...

We can have a million discussions and this will still never look "right" !!!

On the other hand, this gold lame driving suit will NEVER look right - be it Ford or MoPar. :-)

My uncle intro'd me to racing in 1974. He jokingly threatened me I had to pull for Ol' Blue if I expected him to tote me to the races. He started pulling for Richard in the early 60s because he drove Plymouths, and my uncle was a MoPar guy. Immediately I started pulling for Richard mainly because I like the look of the car ... and because I wanted my uncle to take me again!

But the fact Richard drove a Dodge by then didn't matter much to me I don't think. Don't get me wrong, I think that STP red/Petty blue 74 Dodge Charger was the coolest looking race car of the decade. But when Petty Enterprises went to GM in 78, it didn't cut me as deeply as it did others - including my uncle. Even with the more recent swap by Richard Petty Motorsports to Ford, I just shrugged.
