Yes ! I would have lost both my legs, at least. He grabbed me and pulled me out the way of a spinning car, We were sitting on top of his car, He was looking at the 4th turn and I was looking at the 1st. I did not see the car. It hit right where my legs were.
This man taught me more and helped me more than any other driver.
I have only seen one race on the Beach Road track. It was the 1950 Modified, Sportsman Race. Over 125 cars started. Our seats were in the infield stands in the 3rd turn ( where the cars came off of Hwy 1A1 into the dugout sand turn). Imagine this 100 cars coming down a concrete highway turning into sand dune turn. Half of these cars had the old mechanical brakes and the concrete highway had a small amount of blown sand over it. WHAT A WRECK!
I can remember in the early 50s , Buck Bakers car (Olds 88) was sponsored by Johnny's Drive In and the pit crew were employees of the Drive In.
Back then lug wrenches were required as were Hub Caps. The lug nuts were placed in the Hub Cap. One of the pit crew accidently stepped on the Hub Cap and the lug nuts went everywhere. It took at least 2 minutes collect all the lug nuts from under the car.
Those were the days!
Peace Haven ran in the Early 50s It wasswitched to Bowman Gray later. I drove at Peace Haven in 1951.
In 1950 when I saw the modified race, Big Bill had to wait an extra half hour for the race to start because the tide hadn't gone out far enough.
Is the day I got married 65 years ago.
All I know is he didn't do much after 1957.
