Petty Enterprises 1963 Help Needed

Stock Car Racing History

If you read my earlier post about Richard Petty's "Ski-King", you may be surprised to find I'm already looking at the next car project.

While Bill Rankin was completing work on the 1959 Plymouth, he contacted me about a pair of 1963 Plymouth Fury kits that would make crackerjack builds of two of that year's Petty Enterprises cars.  I obtained the models and shipped them to him.

And now comes the problem.

One car will be done up as Mr. The King's ride for that year, and the other as Jim Paschal, who won five times for the Pettys that year.

But the problem is that I can't find a lot of photos of the Petty cars from that year, which hinders making a decision on what livery to put them in.  I have found a lot of photos of Richard's car from Riverside, with the big "Plymouth" on the back and the white hood, but to be honest, that's not one of my favorite looks.

I found a great photo of Richard's car from the Rebel 300, with sponsorship from Southern Motors of High Point, NC, but it's numbered 42.  I want the No. 43 for Mr. The King.  I found some great shots of the car from the Bridgehampton win, with no sponsorship, meaning a clean rear fender area, but "Plymouth By Petty" on the C pillar.  There's also indication of sponsorship on the car at SoBo and Bristol, but I can't find any clean photos to see who the sponsor was.

As to Paschal, I'm happy enough with the clean fender look, although I did find a screen shot of the No. 41 with a big "Plymouth" on the back and white rims.  Not sure if that's a Paschal car or not.

Can anyone give me any help in finding a good couple of shots that will give me some ideas to with this car?  I usually like a look that's representative of the overall season (which is why I'm not that crazy about the one off white hood from Riverside).  I will attach a few of the photos I've found, including the Rebel 300 and the No. 41 with Plymouth on the fender.  I'd love some feedback and thoughts on this - and I'd very much appreciate any photos I've not seen of the Petty cars from that year.  Thanks!!!!!

Petty's "Ski-King" Flies Again!

Stock Car Racing History

Wanted to share my latest addition to my personal racing museum, this awesome model by the great Bill Rankin.  It's Mr. The King's 1959 Plymouth, as raced in that year's Southern 500.  Richard finished fourth with an assist from Marvin Panch, and led the first seven laps of his Grand National career.

I've always referred to this as the "Ski-King" Plymouth, as those words are painted above the No. 43 on the door.  Does anybody have any idea what the story is behind that?  I've never found an explanation, and would love to know.

Georgia Racing HOF Member Roz Howard Passes Away

Stock Car Racing History

The folks at ARCA are also remembering Roz as the 1957 MARC (ARCA) Southern champion on their website. Very nice of them, spoke to them today and they are very, very mindful of their history. Thanks to them for remembering the heroes! Take a look at their front page.....

Georgia Racing HOF Member Roz Howard Passes Away

Stock Car Racing History

Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Roz Howard passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91.

Howard, a native of Macon, GA, honed his skills as a mechanic in the motor pool of the Army in 1942. In 1946, he got his first taste of driving in a borrowed car at a track cut into a cornfield near Macon. Howards day ended when he flipped the borrowed car three times. But it didnt end his desire to race.

Howard would compete on the Southern Racing Enterprise circuit in the early 1950s, competing across the southeast and scoring several feature wins.

In 1956, Howard would compete in his first NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) event, as he drove his own car to a 13th place finish, earning a whopping $250 for his effort.

In 1957, Howard won the MARC (now ARCA) Southern Late-Model Points championship title. He also scored a major victory in the series Labor Day event at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta, GA. He won in cars powered by engines built by fellow Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Paul McDuffie.

pawn stars and goodyear tire

General

You know, I have all the cards in my 1988 MAXX Race Cards set of Dale Earnhardt signed. All three of them were signed right in front of me, at different times, and all three of them look different. One of them....he just flat ruined the card, had I not seen Dale sign it, I never would have guessed it was his signature. So sometimes, you have to take that into account.

Looking for Beltsville Speedway info

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

I'm trying to locate some technical info for a friend on the old Beltsville Speedway in MD. I've found photos, but what I really need is the technical info, the track length, degree of banking, stuff like that.

Also, would anybody have a good aerial shot of the track?

Thanks!

New pictures of the NASCAR Tucker surface

Current NASCAR

I had those shared with me by Tom Merola, son of Joe Merola, who owned and drove the NASCAR Tucker. They are, in a word, awesome!!!!!

What Did He Say?

General

"Hey Dale, Tim Flock told me we might be more popular with the fans if we drove with a monkey in the car like he did back in '53."

"That's funny, Darrell. Junior just told me we're both driving like there ARE monkeys in the cars."

"So just why is that no matter what we do, we just don't compare to Petty, Pearson, Yarborough, Baker and Roberts?"
