Pretty impressive about Penske. I remember him contending for the lead and ultimately finishing 2nd behind F1 legend Jim Clark in a sports car race at Riverside in the early 60s. It must have taken tremendous willpower for him to stop racing completely when he did and hand over the driving duties to Donohue and others.
The only highlight of Donohue's otherwise very humbling stock car experience.
In his book The Unfair Advantage, he talks about how his headstrong ways of doing things instead of listening to the old hands' advice made his life very difficult. But at a road course, equipped with the 'unfair' advantage of the disc brakes, he was in his element.
It's still the case today that you have guys that won in everything all over the world being completely lost in a 'nascar' and going away humbled.
I really like Donohue. I think he would have been a real great guy to have a few beers with and talk racing of many different flavors.
I just hope it helps Iowa get a Cup date. Every series that's raced on it from Indycar and K&N to trucks and Nationwide has put on top-class racing and Cup schedule could use some tracks that actually put on good racing.
Not a big surprise. Given the level of talent he got to work with, the results didn't measure up.
