RANDOM NOTES FROM THE 600

General

I wish I had known you were there, I was in the Toyota Terrace and I would have loved to have met you. My wife and I were in section G. Small world. Sorry you and your grandsons had to endure such things. I've had close to the same thing happen to us at the All Star race back arould 1996 or so. I saw things I could never have made up. I don't remember much of the race but I remember the woman with the nipple peircing that let everyone see and feel. I wish I could share more. Maybe at the next race we can meet up.

Didn't win but had a great time

General

Wanted share how my trip to Charlotte turned out. It was great and I won something better than a new Toyota Camry. I did compete in the Camry Give-A-Way but didn't make it past the first cut down to the top 8. The Toyota people were great and we did get to meet Joey Lagono and a free meal and all the Cokes and water we could take. Then one of the girls from Toyota approached the gentleman I had been sitting with all morning, Dan McClean, and ask him if he would like to drive on of the trucks during driver intros. The offer was for 2 people and he ask me to ride with him. What a treat! I jumped at the chance and we hoped on a bus and rode to the waitting trucks stationed off the backstretch. 7 rows,3 acrossof new Toyota trucks, one row was Red, the next was White and the last was Blue. Danwill be 73 next week and had been battling leg cramps all morning, so when we were instructed to select a truck, Dan went to the closes one avaliable, middle of the second row. We headed out in order, red, white and blue, we were truck #5. We parked on the front stretch near the stage and waited for our turn to take part in the festivities. When ourturn arrived we picked up J.J. Yeley and his young daughterand Michael McDowell andheaded off on our dilivery. It was great towitness the way the fans cheer and encouraged the drivers as they rode safelyin the back of our sparkling white Toyota truck. After the drop off we waited in the infield till all the trucks had made their diliveries and then drove back to the area where we picked up the trucks, hoped a bus and was driven to the gate of our choosing. I was the last off and made to my seatsjust as they started their 4th lap. Great seats, good people and the chance of a life time. This was much better than a new Camry. I have been so blessed lately. Of all the races I've attended at Charlotte since 1973, this ranks in the top 5. I wish everyone could havetheoppertunity to do this, it was so fun. Thanks Dan, I'll never forget it.

TWO WORTHY OF SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Current NASCAR

Agree. They have been so good for so long that I fail to notice just how good they are. Thanks for reminding me. I spoke with Mr. Kelly at the NHOF a vew weeks back. I walked up to him and tried to congratulate him and his staff for their efforts there and he was very quick to say, very humbly, "I'M not Mr. Kelly, I'm Winston. Thank you so much for those kind words. We have a great staff and I hope you enjoy your visit today, and please come back." Class Act. He can put anyone at ease and make you feel like you are the only one around. Great guy. The Hall of Fame coundn't have selected a better person for the job.

I should buy a Lottery Ticket

I'm withholding any and all handshakes till I'm sure that all luck is gone. Seriously Tim I would love to shake your hand. You are one heck of a gentleman and a joy to chat with. I wish I could make it to some of the RR stuff.

I should buy a Lottery Ticket

General

I don't care for Toyotas myself, but my wife drive a Lexus... same thing. If all the planets a align and all my competition is feeble or stoned out of their minds, and I don't rip the wires and staples out of my ankle, I might just win. I'd drive it if I won it, but I wouldn't buy one.

I should buy a Lottery Ticket

General

This must be my lucky year, you know I won tickets to Talladega earlier this year and now I won tickets to the Coke 600 and I have a chance to win a 2011 Camry. Wont happen but I get the free tickets anyway. To win the Camry I will have to compete against 51 others winners in a timed contest to load the trunk of a Camry, put on Toyota Racing gear and start the car. I think the quickest 8 will compete on stage doing the same timed contest in the pre-race with the fastest time winning the camry. The top 8 also get their seats upgrade to the suites. With my ankle I doubt I can compete but my wife insist I give it a try. I'm happy with the free tickets. Hope the 600 is better than the All Star.

Bobby Allison's 85th race win in question?

General

Here's what I found:

1971 Myers Brothers 250

The 1971 Myers Brothers 250 was held August 6, 1971 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The first car to cross the finish line after 250 laps was driven by Bobby Allison.

The dispute in question came because of early 1970s combination races for the smaller Grand American Series, featuring " pony cars ", such as the Chevrolet Camaro , Ford Mustang , and AMC Javelin , as well as the Grand National Series, featuring the Chevrolet Chevelle , Ford Torino Talladega , Dodge Charger Daytona , and Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird . For that race, and the race following at West Virginia International Speedway, Allison raced a Grand National - Grand American combination race in a Grand American Series specification 1970 Ford Mustang, #49, sponsored by Rollins Leasing, and owned by Melvin Joseph. (Joseph was the head of Dover International Speedway until his death in 2005.) As he was not racing in a Grand National car, he never received credit in that series, but was credited with a Grand American Series ("pony" cars) win.
