A glimpse of greatness.

General

Well put Robbie, and thanks for the info. I agree with you when you stated that Tim Richmond was the best you ever saw. The things he could do with the car were amazing. Once they had a car that would stay together he put on a display that I will never forget. He races hard for every position. What a joy to witness.

As part of ESPN's 30 For 30 critically acclaimed series, 'Tim Richmond: To the Limit' debuts at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday. The film celebrates the magnetism of Richmond's personality and the natural driving ability that won the admiration of seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt. We hope youll check it out!

A glimpse of greatness.

This is just a reminder that ESPN will show tonight an hour long documentary on the life, success and tragic passing of one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, Tim Richmond. I'm looking forward to reliving the highs and excitement of his racing accomplishments, but I'm also full of apprehension as I'm reminded of his untimely death. I wonder what might have been but I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to witness his entire career in NASCAR. Todays drivers owe so much to this very talented racer and icon of the sport.

WONDER IF JR WOULD HAVE 3 WINS IF HE HAD STAYED AT DEI

Stock Car Racing History

Hey jb1, I hope I never become as cynical as seem to have become. I do not buy the idea that any of the big teams provide better equipment to certain teams, and less to others. As long as the team is intact and It makes no sence. Jr's car and motors are built by the same engine shop that provides motors to all 4 Hendrick teams and the 2 Stewart cars and Furniture Row car. There may be more. The tuning can be changed to suit the driver/crew chief preference, but for the most part every engine is the same. Why would any engine builder put a poor preforming engine in the car of the most popular driver ( for some, not me)? The whole argument makes no sence.

WONDER IF JR WOULD HAVE 3 WINS IF HE HAD STAYED AT DEI

Stock Car Racing History

Hers my take on this whole Jr/DEI/Hendricks deal. I think Jr has more talent than he's been able to show in the last few years. We all agree that the equipment is top notch at Hendricks. He quailies well but when the green flag drops he works his way to the back in nearly every race. The problem is always in the handling. This tells me that the issue is either with the driver or the Crew Chief, or both. Jr is on his third Crew Chief and the reports are that they seem to work well together, though the results say otherwise. I honestly feel that Jr can't inform a Crew Chief as to what the car needs and the direction they should go. I don't see a change in the results any time in the near future. Sorry Jr fans.

Deserve to be in the HOF, but when?

General

Good points. I don't think it will be many years before they are recognized and honored by the HOF. Crew Chiefs are going in this year and my view if H/M is that they were just as important to the teams as CC's. Without them I don't see the growth of NASCAR that we enjoy today. I don't hear much talk about H/M by the fans and this worries me. Their place in NASCAR shouldn't be minimized or overlooked. The growth of the sport from the early 60's through the late 70's in many ways can be tied to H/M. The "Superstar" drivers were the faces that the fans saw, but it was the competition and the teams that made it all possible. H/M was the named tied to most of the winning FoMoCo drivers and a way for Ford to stay involved in the sport. I look forward to the day when Holman Moody will take their place in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Pete Banchoff said:
H/M would have to go in as a company and I agree they contributed so much to Nascar Cup cars and teams. They were a private contractor not a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company and deserve to go into Nascar's Hall of Fame as a company. They had so much influence back in the day much like Hendrick has today. They built top notch cars and engines with the best technical support and builders at the time. Also had a good group of owners and drivers using their race cars.

I hope they go in but I think it will be a long time before they do. Got to get all the 70's, 80's and 90's drivers in first with 5 going in per year.

Deserve to be in the HOF, but when?

General

Hi everyone. I've been giving a little thought to the prospective members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and I have a thought and wonder who else may agree. When looking and the teams that had a huge impact on the sport, bothin to competition as well as technology, it is easy to get distracted and overlook some that are deserving of the honor. Many teams come to mind but for me the choice is rather simple. Hands down my vote goes to Holman Moody. If not for them and their famous shop I don't think that Charlotte would be the Hub of the sport today. So many great drivers and championshipsover the years and the technological genius of this shop help to mold the sport to what it is today. The only problem I see is how do they get elected? Select both with a single vote or will it take a vote for each? Either way, my opinion is they have contributed so much to the sport we all love that they deserve to be in the HOF. Will it be this year, probaly not. What more could they have done?

What are your thoughts?

NASCAR---- What do you think, is it still interesting???

Stock Car Racing History

I became a NASCAR before I ever attented my first race. I use to sit with my uncles and would listen to the many stories and tales around the sport. They spoke with such passion and I hung on every word. I never saw Fireball, Lorenzen or Tuner run, but in my mind I have a very vivid picture painted by the words of those that had witnessed some of the legends of the sport. I spent hour after hour pouring through the stacks of Stock Car Racing magazines and reading about the sport that would become my passion. In 1973 I made my pilgrimage to Charlotte to the National 500. At the age of 13 I was able to witness the spectacle and feel the power of NASCAR. I haven't been the same since. At times I felt odd or out of place because I could only find one other student in school that knew about NASCAR and the heros that filled my imagination. We had verbal battles weekly, he was a Cale fan and I, of course, pulled for the King. We had great fun sparring back and forth. As an adult I've been fortunate enough to follow the sport and attend many races over the years. Live my dream as part of a Cup team for a few years and witnessed a what many feel was the greatest era of the sport. It is much changed, but still the same. Drivers and teams have come and gone but the sport is still recognizable. For me the NASCAR of today can't compete with my memories. We are bombarded by the media daily resulting in sensory overload, and with that has comes a numbing of the excitment. I still love NASCAR and I hope I always will but it takes a little effort to stay interested. Some races I would just as soon take a trip to the grocery store than try to watch. I guess this comes with age and the demands of my family, but I still call myself a fan.So yes, NASCAR still has a special place in your heart, but it was forged in the competition of racing many years ago. I'm amazed at the feelings that sometimes overwhelm me when I see films and coverage of the races of yesteryear. I shot of a Petty blue Plymouth still makes my hair stand on end, and yet 3 hours of todays race coverage barely keeps me awake. I am so grateful to have been a witness to something great. Thanks for the question, I love this site.Bumpertag in S. Carolina
